Derby entrants will be picked by Churchill based on a points system for a selected 36 prep races.

I personally think this is a great idea, but i guess we will see

36 races huh... Im glad there doing something and applaud the change.

This crop of Derby runners, although a good one, not great, for the most part had to just win one designated race, and their name was assured on the list.

Could we see some horse with a few more races under there belt?

I will withhold judgement for now, however, I think 2YO racing should have some bearing on the KY Derby.  You could win the Del Mar Futurity & BC Juvie (both Gr. I races), finish fourth and sixth in a couple of Derby preps and get left out of the gate.

Also, you will never see a filly win the Derby again, as long as this system stands.

I applaud the efforts to change, because we have to, but I'm not sold on this just yet.

I needed to read a bit better as 2yo races do get some consideration.

Limited, but some nonetheless.

I think it is bullcrap done only to help CDI and to screw competitive tracks. Read Bill Finley's article on espn.com for a good explanation.

Mikey, It looks like CD looked after its own and let the Derby Trial (totally irrelevant as a prep today) count but the Illinois Derby not.  Surely they could have[ at least] included it in the "wildcard" category .

Looks to me by reading the Saturday's DRF that most top trainers do not like this new system at all.  Also check out the latest Indian Charlie's newsletter.  Obviously most horsemen are totally against this system.  I myself am against most of it.  The only part I agree with are putting less stress on sprint races.  The Kentucky board that put this in place are truly egotistical and only want points from a few major races.  They are playing God with this and are probably gonna get away with it as well.
