Sorry, just seeing this thread now.....
I will point you to this thread, which goes indepth in to what I do and how I do it.... https://www.covers.com/postingforum/post01/showmessage.aspx?spt=89&sub=100991258
But to answer your questions succinctly.....
1. Tough to answer. For the first time in over a decade, business income outweighed gambling last year. My primary source of income was from gambling - the gambling landscape has changed so much just in the time I have been doing this that other income streams were necessary. I do not envy someone trying to make a living sports betting these days.
2. Because of #1, MLB has been taken out of what I bet about 3 years ago. So now it is just NCAAF, NFL, and soccer. Soccer is almost a year round season.
3. MLB not for 3 years, NBA not for 30 years.
4. I did bet Obama (twice). Got good odds for the time I bet it - yes. Had a thread about it in the politics forum posted in Feb for the Nov election. You cant find line skews anywhere like you can in a presidential election - at least in the last several elections. Someone like Nate Silver is a tremendous help - whatever analysis you can do on your own will never beat his. So if all you did was bet the difference between his line and the betting line you would be rich. And it is surprisingly very easy to do. At several points - he had Obama as a -500+ favorite and you could still bet him between -150 and -200.
Overall - I don't post picks. The main reason is because "picking" is really only part of how I make money. When I had this up and running in full swing (2002 - 2010), I was making most of my money through predictive line models. But this is close to impossible these days - movement of funds and lack of book choices has limited this.
So its hard to post a pick on Thursday, but because of a line move I have sold it by gametime on Sunday. But these days - I do rely on betting soccer for the most part - and I have had the most success the past 3 years that I have ever had in anything (percentage-wise). I have it fine tuned and dialed in, knock on wood.
I just don't enjoy posting picks here. Its not fun. I have been at covers for over a decade, and as the site and internet has evolved - so have I. Covers used to be a place to post picks for a lot of reasons - but at the bottom of it all - I just don't have any enjoyment from doing it anymore. I feel bad when I lose, and don't get anything except aggravation when I win. So I just post less.
But I do read a lot. The amount of new material here is frightening low - it seems as if everything there is on sports gambling has been said before - its just a new username with a newer date and deja vu. So Covers is a lot less prominent in my daily internet life than it used to be, as is gambling.
I have invested in some businesses that are doing quite well, so that has shifted a lot of my personal focus away from gambling. I often feel like it is a shame that forces have taken something away from me that I was good at - and that I didn't take advantage more when I had the chance (2000-2005). But I cant complain overall. I used to go sit in an office in a douchebag company M-F, and gambling got me out of that - and I will never have to do that again in my life. So for all of that - I am thankful.
