If you truly want to win the Vince Lombardi trophy, I'm sorry but you don't threat over things like concussions etc, Did he think NFL football was a safe sport and therefore he only realized it wasn't after sustaining a concussion or two? Naivety at it's finest.
His decision is basically like a guy who has to decide between continuing to work his 9/5 job and just get by in life or invest in a business to possibly improve his life significantly and run the risk of being in debt or having to find answers later down the line, I know which guy I am, God forbid I start taking the easy option in life, We could die tomorrow, You should never be in your comfort zone, Always strive for more.
Chris Borland doesn't need me to defend him. But I will, just the same. This guy played over his head for years in college and for one season in the NFL....this isn't a premadonna taking the money and running...this guy was a grinder that earned everything he ever got.
A few thoughts:
1) Borland played linebacker for 5 years at Wisconsin, and 1 year in the pros.
2) Missed 2010 at Wisky with an injury.
3) The knock on Borland was that he was always undersized at 6'0 215. to play inside He played bigger than that....and had to in order to survive at the D1 level, let alone the NFL.
4) Take a look at the tackle totals at Wisky: 54, 7(injury year), 143,104,111.....last season he led the 49ers with 108 tackles.
Do you have the slightest clue on the amount of contact that Borland has sustained???? On his entire body, not just his head?
Throw the games out.......do you have any idea how much hitting at the D1 level Borland's body sustained in practice over 5 years? Through an NFL training camp and 17 week season? The number of blows to his head number in the thousands. AND you question his heart????? The guy might not be able to remember his name for all we know.
I recommend you read Bill Romanowski's book "Romo"...listen to how he describes the condition of his brain after a lifetime of playing linebacker.
Also, ask yourself what good is having millions of dollars if you can't remember how you made it. He is not just attempting to prolong his life, but enhance the quality of it.
Its a personal decision, and to each his own, but to question Borland's heart is ridiculous.
Never Make A Winner A Loser. Never.
