Well darn... We were told that fast food places would not be getting kiosks and be darned if that was not correct... Shoot...
But!!! McDonald's has an even better idea that will save them money. First they do not have to buy kiosks, second they will not have to maintain the kiosks. Plus, no lines to place an order with a cashier OR to use an in-store kiosk...
What McDonald's is doing is providing a smart phone application that will allow you to create an order, and input credit card info to pay for the order. To me the brilliant part is to place the order you have to scan a code at the ordering station. No waiting behind people challenged by the concept of order food...

What percentage of their sales will come from smart phones?
Sure its cute and fun to have a tekkie app like this, nothing wrong with doing creative things but how does that translate to their total sales?
Btw...I love kiosks, I can handle using one without hand holding, same for smart phone apps but the majority of people cannot use them efficiently to the same extent that person to person transactions do.
The main goal to McD's is speed of service..the faster you serve the MORE you serve and the MORE money you make..that is why kiosks make no sense economically and have failed every time they were introduced in the past.

Geez Wall... Really? You are so smarter than this... Why are you so against automating the ordering in fast food restaurants? There is no way you will ever convince me you really and truly do not see this coming. All I can surmise is you have dug in your heels that standing in line and ordering from a cashier that rings up your order and hands it to you is the only way it will ever work. And now you feel that any give on this will cause you to lose face. And on that note you would be wrong...

I am disappointed in you. Honestly...
Actually if you closely examine my viewpoints..everything I have said revolves around speed of service, plausibility and profits.
I am not against kiosks or apps..I enjoy them and use them whenever I get the chance. I never do person to person if a kiosk is available..so what you are saying about me digging in my heels etc is off base.
I do not think that a fast food place can use kiosks and have it make financial sense. The cost to install and maintain, the loss of upselling, the marginal gain from having them does not make sense..and the loss of speed of service alone is reason they should not be placed at pure fast food places.
Food automation is the same issue..to me it is only about profits and speed of service.

First, they are not installing kiosks. No kiosk cost, no maintain kiosk cost...
And I know first hand, as I have typed several times here, automated ordering will not work for everyone. I have many older friends who will never use an automated system. I have a loved one that is visually impaired that will never be able to use a smart phone app. And time wise it will be years before the majority of orders are automated. Change is never instant and total. Change takes time. There are always those who fight change for the sake of fighting change.
I walk in there and there is a line. I place my order using my cell phone. My order would simply be added to the end of the orders being filled. As far as picking up the order I just wait for my number to be called, step up, take order, walk out... Done deal...
I can not see how my using my cell phone to place my order would cause
the service to slow down. How would that disrupt service? And as far as who would place my order at the end of the waiting orders... The same person who takes all the orders from the drive thru lanes and each of the cash registers... No one a computer does it. My order would simply be another input, no different than input from any other computer system.
I really would like to know how my cell phone order would cause a "loss of speed of service"? It would simply be another order to fill...

Very similar to self-checkout lanes at a retailer such as a grocery store or Home Depot. Sure, they are convenient. But whenever you get stuck behind some donkey who feels like playing cashier but is too stupid to navigate through the process and delaying you, it gets annoying. I can see similar instances with this. All this is, is a gimmick. It won’t revolutionize anything.

Ordering via the cell phone CAN slow down speed of service if it is not handled properly from their POS system..
Ordering via person to person SHOULD add upsell profits if the cashier knows what they are doing and you cannot get that from a kiosk or a cell phone app to the degree you can with a suggestive sale person to person transaction.
I like stuff like kiosks and apps, but again I am only speaking about speed of service and profits.
Also you do know that most places like McD's has more sales on a percentage basis from drive thru than dine in..so unless they have a very educated DT staff and a very complex POS system, using a cell phone app positively will slow down DT speed of service.

Your very first sentence is absolutely excellent... I taught computer programming in college and adding a cell phone order to a POS system queue is a not a challenge.
And adding an upsell to an app??? Really, you do not think it could be done... I would have failed a student who could not figure out how to trigger a suggested size upgrade to an order or to inquire if cheese was wanted on a burger. Easy... Intro to Programming teaches this.
And as far as DT... How about when I am ordering I indicate whether I am walking in or driving thru? Then when I pull into the DT I tell the cashier I ordered by cell phone and my cell phone order number is 9764. Then when I pull up to the window I am handed order number 9764. Easy...
and before anyone points out someone could claim to be me and pick up my order first... How would they know to ask for order 9764? Maybe ask the cashier what order numbers have not been picked up and then claim mine?
You want to make it seem complicated and complex. Trust me it ain't...

Self checkout lanes are great if you have less than 10 items. Otherwise I hate and despise them. The problem is not with the self checkout lanes, it is with the corporate idiots and stupid store managers who think they can do away with cashiers and force people to use them.
Excellent idea, when used properly by the corporate and store staff...

It is not complicated from a programming perspective..but how many times do I need to say that it isnt about programming?
Have you ever worked at a place like McD's? Do you know the precision that takes place to function during peak periods? The target time for a transaction from arrival to delivery and exit in the DT is between 15 and 30 seconds. So tell me how throwing in a wrench like a cell phone app order which is out of sequence will help INCREASE speed of service or profits?
I dont care if you think it is a-ok and that its not complex..you are not running the DT and you are not the 10 cars behind you getting perturbed waiting while they sort out your order so YOU can have your cell phone order. My only comments have been regarding speed of service and profits.
Having an upsell popup to an app is NOT nearly as efficient as person to person interaction. If you were walking into Walmart and your phone gave a popup to donate to the Girl Scouts or to the Salvation Army..do you think the YIELD on that opportunity would be as efficient as having someone face to face ask you the same question?
You have to be joking the rationale you are using here..it makes no sense.
Cell phone app is nice for those who enjoy such things but no way does it compare to person-to-person transactions nor does it INCREASE speed of service. I am glad we like such things but from a business perspective it has little relevance to the larger picture of their operations.

It works faster for me at capriottis. A long behind line and just pull out my phone order online and my sandwich is in the queue before all these people in front of me.

Thanks... I will have to try it out next time I am in Nevada.
