Going to Pittsburgh in August, any natives?

Hey lads, 

I'll be in Pittsburgh in August, I'm from Sweden originally but been living on the Island of Malta for the last year. Im an American sport fan and always been sticking to the Pittsburgh teams, really over the two years my interest for America and Pittsburgh has certainly grown and I decided to actually go there, which I'm really looking forward to. 

Just want to see if there are any natives from there here on the forum? 

I'm hoping to catch a Pirates game during the visit, cheking around in the city and doing the common touristic stuff. If anyone has got advice of what I can't miss, please let me know and feel free for any suggestions of places to go and so forth.

You have to go to PNC park for a Pirates game. It is a great ballpark and a very enjoyable experience.

I am 20 years old, born 93. More of a calm softie, explorer kind of. So my first priority is definitely not going to blast the bars and get heavily drunk ^^ 

Oh yea? Cabs are cheap? How about like buses? What's the most effective way to get around. I'll be living in Harmarville during the time, and the ballpark is on the other side of the Allegheny River but I guess it should be some kind of bus system or "T" as you said :)

PNC Park is a definite choice, I will go there to catch a game. Was hoping to see any of the Steelers pre-season matches but I'll not be there during the dates sadly.

Any ideas where to go to get the GREATEST view of the city, like to get a nice couple of pictures with an overview of the bridges/buildings etc?

I'll for sure take a tour to the Duquense Incline as well as Mt Washington. Looks like two brilliant spots to go for some pictures over the city, especially towards the night I assume? Also, Point Park seems to be worth a visit from what seen on pictures. Cheers for advises lads

Ah so there are buses from Harmerville that goes straight to the city and the mentioned areas? (or close enough for a walk to them?). I'll look up the best bus options more on the suggested Pittsburgh PAT on google. Hm, otherwise, what is a normal price for a cab in and out of town back to the place in Harmerville? a 12 mile distance?

Really? You go to school in Harmerville or you mean't somewhere else in Pittsb? Many thanks for the advices of places. Definitely, I have looked it up and the game at PNC Park during my period of stay will be 3 straight home games versus Arizona Diamondbacks during a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It doesn't look expensive, quite cheap as the prices are around 20-35 dollars it seems like.

Great town lots to do . they have a ton of good places to eat. pnc is the best.strip district is great to go see. southside has the best bars.culture dist has lots of different types of shows. Mt. washington has  the greatest view I ever saw in any city.

Cabs are not cheap for sure.Lots to see lots to do enjoy and the people are really nice.

Dont bring your appetite, food is terrible

Tone you have to be kidding right?  Pittsburgh has some really cool places to eat, and the food is really good..  Maybe you had a bad experience, because if you are comparing it to Philly...

You have to take a walk down the streets of the strip district..definitely a must see, tons of culture and something that screams pittsburgh.

- Cheers mate, I will certainly have a look at the Strip district and check that out, I am amazed by those kind of things when I got to a new town/country. Also will have a look at that music show event in case something's on, cheers for the link! :)

Also guys, where is the best place to take a girl? Keep in mind that she is a friend, but since we do not have the opportunity to meet often due to me living in Europe, I thought I wanted to make this meeting a more special occasion, because it doesn't happen everyday. Any specific resturants that comes to mind? Also, any particular cozy places, where it's quite peaceful to go out to, or to sit outside anywhere?

Lawrenceville is a nice area to take someone..food is great and a ton of different choices

You will love Pittsburgh man, it really is a beautful city.

Without a doubt, for the best view of the city, you will want to go to Mt Washingon -- the view is unreal.  I've never lived anywhere but here and the view from Mt Washington is still jaw dropping every time, gorgeous city.

Rather than driving up Mt Washington (sounds like you might not have a car anyway?) go for the real taste of Pittsburgh's past and take "the incline".  As someone else mentioned, you'll want to check out Station Square, which is where 'the incline' (basically a box car that rides up the hill) departs.  As someone mentioned, the 'south side' (just down the road from Station Sqaure) is the younger, trashier strip of bars -- but despite being 20 and not being able to drink, you might want to check it out during the day.  A lot of cool little shops, you'll like it.

Tell us a little more about what you're into and I'll try to come up with some other areas to check out.  Lots of good food places to check out, let us know if you have $$ to throw around for good food, or if you would be more interesting in cheaper but still good little hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

Taking a shot in the dark, but if you like to smoke I can make that happen - would love to learn about Sweden and could tell you more about Pittsburgh.


You'll love PNC Park.  I would recommend parking at the Rivers Casino (free, instead of paying for parking) and then walking to PNC Park via the 'riverwalk' along the river.  Stunning view of the city from there too, and its probably only about ehh maybe a mile from the park.

You'll also want to check out 'the point' (where the 3 rivers meet), especially now that the fountain is up and running again.  Not that much of a sight to see, but its a great park where you can relax and take in the view and maybe throw a ball around or something.
