A 2-year-old girl was accidentally shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother with a rifle he received as a birthday gift, Kentucky authorities said on Wednesday.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Burkesville, Kentucky, a community in the south-central part of the state, when the boy was playing with the .22-caliber rifle and accidentally shot his sister in the chest, state police said.
The boy had received the Crickett "youth model" gun for his birthday in November, Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said. White said these guns have child safety locks, but "evidently when the gun was put up, there was a live round in it."
He said no one realized the gun, which was kept in a corner, was loaded until the fatal gunshot.
White said the children's mother was home cleaning house at the time of the shooting.

The level of irresponsibility LITERALLY makes me want to take a baseball bat to "Daddy" and "Mommy" and beat on them until there is no conceivable way for him to sire another child or her ever to be pregnant again. Stupidity at this level makes me wish there was true justice and they would both be put down.
Guns ARE not toys. IF you are not hunting for food, shooting to improve proficiency or cleaning the weapon it should not be loaded and secured in a such a way a child can not gain access.
Senseless irresponsibility... And I am quite sure that both of these excuses are saying the same thing: "If we knew something like this could happen we would have locked the gun away"... (Mixed in with heartfelt tears)
I truly feel for the boy. He is a victim of his parents stupidity.

Very sad ... And the parents gave a 5 year old a real rifle as a bday present?! Seems a little too young in my opinion. But the carelessness of the parents is just awful.

"Yeah for hillbillys and no restrictions on my second amendment rights...who cares if innocent children die" said the gun manufacturers' b**ch, the NRA.

I totally understand your feelings that 5 years is too young to be given a gun as a birthday present... And unless the parents are very responsible a gun is a very bad idea.
But, I also believe that the boy could have been given a gun as a birthday present, But, and a Big But the gun should have been treated as a gun and not as a toy. And properly secured when not in use.
The death of the little girls is directly and totally the fault of the "parents"...

There's absolutely no excuse for giving a 5 yo a fuckin gun......that's just insane. Parents should be charged with IM......minimum. I don't think I even shot a gun until I was 11 or 12 & I sure as hell didn't have one of my own.
Sad.......

Me as well.....and that was in a field while my dad was helping me. I wasn't allowed to carry my own gun until I completed a gun safety course (best class I ever took....saved my behind when I had a hang fire one time.....if I hadn't taken that class, I would have just ejected the shell and looked at it to see why it didn't fire). I can't believe how many things I still remember from that class (the shoot/no shoot scenarios saved my a$$ more than once as well).

I got a BB gun at about 10 years old. I was young and stupid so I proceeded to shoot out all the rear windows of a vacant retail store that was down the street from our house.
The squirrels hated me as they were way too easy to hit.
Got my first .22 at about 17 years old and only shot at bottles and cans.
Giving a five year old a deadly weapon is as dumb as it gets.
