About 8 years ago I was in a serious car accident. I was driving my friends car, he was in shotgun and some broad was in the back seat. I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a telephone pole at about 50 mph and I wasn't wearing a seat belt. Thankfully they both were so they were fine. My face slammed into the steering wheel. I broke my nose, both eye sockets, both cheek bones and I bit my tongue in half. I went to the icu at MGH. 15 stitches across my tongue and surgery through my mouth to repair my face. Because they did the surgery through my mouth is don't have any scars and I look the same as I did before the accident.
After going through a few months of hell the pain was almost all gone and it was behind me.
Fast forward 8 years.
I was helping a friend plow during the big snow storm 6 weeks ago. I was going 2 days straight. For the first time in my life I had a flashback to the accident while I was plowing. I even swirved the truck and braced for impact. It was so real that I had to pull over because I thought my nose was bleeding.
Now it's happened 3 or 4 times in the past month or so. One time I was on the highway when it happened and I almost caused another accident.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? What is it? What should I do?

I don't remember much. I remember seeing the pole a millisecond before slamming into it.. Then I woke up, I was on the ground with medics around me. Wires were down, ambulances, fire trucks, police everywhere.. I remember the medic putting his hand to my face and lifting it up and it was dripping with my blood. Then they had to take a cat scan or something and I had to lay flat but when I would lay flat it felt like I was going to choke on my own blood.. That's pretty much all I remember before the surgery..

Every time it's been the same thing. I go back to that millisecond before I hit the pole, I brace and then I can almost feel real impact even though I'm just imagining it. Then it feels like my face is broken again. It all happens in a few seconds but it's crazy how real it is.
The thing that concerns me is that it happens when i'm driving so it's dangerous.

I can only imagine how traumatizing that must be. It certainly does sound quite frightening.
I'm not to well versed in psychological trauma so forgive me if I'm way off here, but have you considered seeking a therapist of some sort, perhaps doing some kind of hypnotherapy? Perhaps unlocking a full picture of what happened as oppose to little fragments?
As you said, this can be extremely dangerous if this is happening while driving. Not only to your own safety but other drivers as well.
Best of luck!

This is called PSTD, The same thing happens with any person Who goes through a traumatizing experience, War, Accidents, Child abuse it is completley normal and a good thing to do for that would be going to a psycologist to talk about the accident and perhaps try see if you have any repressed feelings about it.

your flash back seems to be a trauma symptom... there alot of other possible symptoms, but it it seems like your flash back gets triggered and you react...
often times people will avoid people, places, things that result in flashbacks and trauma symptoms coming back...
So perhaps some of your goal is to be able to recognize triggers and the fact that your experiencing the flash back and how to reset your self...
hyponosis could work, but not one I would recommend... you probably would want to get a better conscious understanding of how to manage flashbacks...
A therapist trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing might be a good fit for the type of symptoms as the clinician should be familiar with symptoms of trauma and how to treat it...
however I would always say to shop around with therapists and see which one is a good fit for you as a solid therapeutic alliance is most important as a base for what ever you want to work on...
if they say they are specialized in cognitive-behavioral therapy, I would say to be aware that it is probably nothing special as any therapist should be trained in that... but EMDR and other trauma specific interventions take more specialization and training...
I typically use "seeking safety" created by Lisa Najavits... but this is for the type of people I see in my practice which are usually people with a combination of trauma symptoms paired with addictions... which does not sound like your issue as your flashback trauma symptom is primary... but this ofcourse is all just based on your post and with out a comprehensive psychological evaluation...
hope this helps and feel free to ask questions...
what I have learned in treating gamblers is that you are probably not the only person on this site that experiences trauma symptoms

people already have used the PTSD label here....

dl36 has this on lockdown with his knowledge, but I can add that it's pretty significant that when you have a flashback and get a big rush of energy going "No!" throughought your body, you're making it more likely for it to happen again, as per Law of Attraction.
Sorry for being negative about this, but you should really look into taking care of this now my friend.
