The framing is up, the electrical has been wired, the
drywall’s been hung and the taping is done.
Now the real fun begins.
I’ve been spending most of my free time over the last couple
months building a man cave in my new home. The basement was unfinished when my
wife and I bought our house, leaving an empty canvas with plenty of
possibilities.
It’s not the biggest basement in the world — about 550
square feet. Some of that got eaten up by the laundry room, while we managed to
squeeze in a small bathroom and office area along the back wall.
It’s left a main area of 16 feet by 16 feet, which is still
large enough to have some fun.
The home theatre portion of the project has been taken care
of. We’ve got a projector that gives us a high-definition picture of up to 100
inches on the one wall, and wires for the surround sound have been run inside
the ceiling and walls to each corner of the room.
The PlayStation 3 will be our DVD player, since you can
connect it to your wireless network and play movies off your computer. It’s
also handy for some pretty sick games of Madden.
For lighting, we’ve got pot lights in the ceiling and one
large light in the middle of the room, on different switches and with a dimmer for the pot lights.
The next steps are painting and decorating, so I’m looking for
ideas.
I’m shooting for a sports bar look with a few photos and an
autographed Gretzky jersey on the walls. A picture of the Las Vegas strip is also
in the plans, and maybe we'll work in a couple photos or posters from a few classic movies.
We’re going to squeeze in a small bar along one of the walls
in a different area of the basement, but still within view of the projector
screen. There will be enough room for a beer fridge, a ledge for drinks and
maybe a couple bar stools.
We’ll throw up a dart board on one of the walls as well. I’ve
been scouring ebay to try and find a decently-priced darts cabinet with a beer logo on the front of
it.
For paint, I’ve talked my wife out of going with a dark
colour in the basement, since it will suck all the light out of the room and
make it look smaller. I’m leaning towards a tan brown and maybe an accent wall
that will frame the projector screen.
What does your man cave look like? What would you suggest
for decorating a basement home theatre to look like a sports bar? I’m curious
to hear what other ideas are out there.

#2 Posted: 4/16/2012 2:43:51 AM doesn't sound like you have room for a bar and dart board area. Just get a comfy L couch that takes up most of the room and a big screen tv with every channel. all you need after that is a mini fridge stocked with beer and a volcano if weed is your thing. darn darts and the mini bar you'll never use. Darts get old quick and with all the drunks you'll have a lot of holes in your wall |

#3 Posted: 4/16/2012 6:01:16 AM you are over thinking it....
All you need is a good lock on the door...
everything else will fall in place over time as you realize you need it...
there are 2 types of man caves...
The one you are talking about is the one that you would have friends over and show to people... you would probably keep it neat and clean and be proud of it...
The other type is one that I have... It serves also as a storage space for my stuff so I know where things are and it also is a place that others have no business going through...
So in my man cave/den I store golf clubs, fishing gear etc. This is a good place to store personal items( I have my volcano there also)...also a good place to store bottles of wine or hard alcohol... I have a couch, a recliner. cpu, 40inch LED TV... this is the secondary TV as you dont want everyone to always be wanting to watch the best TV in the house... It would defeat the purpose of this type of man cave...
regardless of the type... Dart board sounds like a great investment... I also have a card table for a small poker game, cribbage, board game, dominos etc... it is usually folded up but at least there is the option... also store all that stuff, cards, dice, chips...
Bath room to me has advantages and disadvantages... I like the convenience, but if someone does a nasty deuce it could be brutal with very little ventilation...
I wouldnt put too much in to decorating as I have found that I rotate to new stuff as I get it... better places to invest your initial money... start with what you have then upgrade when you have opportunities... i cycled through things like black lights, christmas lights, posters, artwork, lava lamps,
Things friends have in theirs that I think is cool... pool table, foosball, ping pong table, aquarium, surround sound for the true audophile...
I agree with mess about the minibar... it is more for show then actual practical use.. you might be better off with a fridge with freezer and ice maker...

#5 Posted: 4/16/2012 9:55:36 AM Drop the darts... think cards, poker. If space is a big concern, build coffee table that converts to poker table or bar top that coverts to poker "table". Couch TV Music Cards. |

#8 Posted: 4/16/2012 8:23:20 PM I'd definitely get some cool neon signs some kind of rare beer or liquor ones that no one has seen before
maybe a couple of retro arcade machines or a pinball machine
and I'd definitely have a large back bar fully stocked with dozens of different vodkas, whiskeys, rums etc Or even a collection of miniature liquor/spirit bottles like the one Porno Gil had on an episode from the 1st season of Curb Your Enthusiasm

#9 Posted: 4/16/2012 8:30:48 PM Sports memorabilia and a cool fish tank plus the usuals.
And as Messier said, screw the dart board for the very same reason about drunks putting holes into the wall, if not something more serious. |

#12 Posted: 4/16/2012 11:14:10 PM My man cave is just a refrigerator, plasma hung on the wall, poker table, couch and a few folding chairs. Good for watching games down there though. |

#13 Posted: 4/16/2012 11:41:57 PM Big couch, recliner, 2 swivel chairs with foot rests , big screen facing recliner, 40 inch facing opposite towards poker table but can be pulled out an turned around for college football saturdays and march madness. Full bar and full size refridge. All sports stuff on the walls (mostly mizzou and stl cardinals stuff) and liquor stuff inside the bar area. Of course a urinal in the bathroom.
Dont get it too crowded. Get the basics and use it a few times. Then you'll know what you want/need to add. |

An aquarium sounds legitimate.. Maybe a shark tank or something. with neon lights.
I agree with the tv idea having that tv in the man cave and not upstairs in the living room.
dartboards, and small coffee tables are also good.

#20 Posted: 4/17/2012 11:34:20 AM 16x16 doesn't leave you a lot of options. Hopefully your ceiling height is at least 8 ft to accomodate the projector............you may have to shrink the picture more than you want to, unless your couch is going to be along the back wall.........& like someone else mentioned I'd have a strong fan in the bathroom. You may want to consider going with all in-wall/in-ceiling speakers (there are some good in-wall subs made these days too) to save room. I've found that my sound system eats up a lot of space in my room..........speaking of which, I hope you ran some extra electrical to accomodate all the A/V gear. |

#21 Posted: 4/17/2012 1:20:58 PM this world was a better place before the term "man cave" became popular.
Other than that my suggestions in minimal as well. Premium on TV, sofa / recliner comfort, and beer fridge.

#22 Posted: 4/17/2012 1:22:03 PM For a second I thought the question read, "What helps make a good man, cave." ... Well given I'm cave0707, I thought u were asking me what makes a good man. My answer would of been, "You're asking the wrong f*cking guy". But a good man cave would simply be an old couch, old recliner, tv, small frig with beer, little table for poker and a door to keep the wife out. Thatz all u need bro. |
