This move was announced a week ago but i still thought i should post it. UMASS joined the MAC in 2012 and in their contract they could be football only members for 4 seasons and after that decide to either join the MAC in all sports or leave and they chose to leave. When UMASS was added Temple was still in the MAC and the league would have 14 members but Temple left for what was known then as the Big East
This has all come about with North Dakota State's AD making comments at the NCAA Tournament about making the jump to FBS basically out of necessity with the uncertainity in FCS right now. The MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said with UMASS leaving there will be no expansion of the MAC. UMASS has yet to decide if they will go back to FCS,Be an FBS independent or find a new league. The American conference has no interest now because they will have 12 football members when Navy joins in 2015
As a guy who follows the MAC i never knew about that clause in UMASS's deal but i'm glad the MAC will have an even number of schools with 12. If UMASS was staying i've said on here for 2 years to get a 14th school but now why expand except for the almighty dollar. UMASS's best hopes in FBS would be Navy deciding not to stay in the American conference and its never made sense to me why Navy would join a league
I also feel that UMASS made a good decision to leave because why join the MAC in all sports especially basketball? The A-10 got 6 teams in the NCAA tournament and the MAC has gone 15 years without getting at least 2 teams in the NCAA tournament. Playing in the MAC would make no sense in other sports
Just keeping everyone informed. Your thoughts guys

Buffalo will probably be he next team to leave the MAC(at least they are trying to). They think they are the best University (as a whole) that plays sports at the D1 level that is not in a power conference.
UMASS joined the MAC to have a football rivalry with Temple, so it makes sense for them to leave.

UNC Charlotte joins C-USA in 2015 and the Sun Belt will have a 12th school forthe 2015 season. Who that 12th school will be is not yet known though the favorite is Liberty
