Welcome back men. 2012 College Football is only a few short months away...LOL. But the good thing is we all get to breakdown every team, every conference and learn some things on the way. I personally have been doing this lengthy breakdown for 5 consecutive years now here on covers. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. I do serious homework on each team, players, schedules and coaching. I don't take any of this lightly as I live and breathe college football 365 days a year.

I would also hope this thread will help anyone who is preparing for the 2012 season. As the thread progresses through the summer I think most will find this information to be informative and helpful. As some of you know I have weekly threads ( The Ten Things We Learned ) each week during the college football season along with my picks and analysis. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask as I will hope to try and provide the best answer possible.

I like Logan Thomas, but I don't think that he has enough talent around him to win more than 9 games, and like Boom says, worse case I could see them going 6-6.

The Hokies will only be returning 3 starters on offense. While it's nice to have L.Thomas and WR Marcus Davis coming back, Tech will only have 1 offensive lineman and little depth in 2012. Tech always seems to have at least 2 or 3 quality TBs battling for carries, but not this year. VT returns 3 backs with expierience who combined for 25 carries for 59 yards and 0 TDs and 1 reception for 2 yards and 0 TDs.

 Possible Losses

Week 1 - With an inexpierienced offense opening up against an explosive veteran laden Georgia Tech team, I don't think that a Yellow Jacket victory is out of the question here. The 'Jackets always play the Hokies tough anyhow.

Week 6 -  The Tarheels did all but beat VT in Blacksburg LY and bring back QB Bryn Renner and RB Gio Bernard to run another potential very potent offense under Larry Fedora. This game is in Chapel Hill and again a Hokie loss would not shock me.

Week 8 - The Hokies lost twice to Clemson last year as they clearly had trouble with the Tigers' speed. Neither of those games was played in "Death Valley", this one will be.

Week 9 - Another road game against a team with plenty of speed. The 'Canes racked up 519 yards in Blacksburg LY before losing in the final seconds to Tech. Things could be different in Miami.

Week 10 - The Seminoles come to Lane Stadium with arguably the best talent in the ACC. They return 9 starters on both sides of the ball and should have one of the best defenses in the nation. Oh yeah, and they are 13-2 against Virginia Tech.

Week 12 - Rivalry games can turn out to be very weird. Yes the Hokies have owned UVa over the last several years including LY's massacre in Charlottesville. I truly feel that terrible loss will motivate the Cavs to play their game of the year in Blacksburg to try and restore some state pride.

Trap Game? -  Week 3 at Heinz Field. Can Paul Chryst restore some magic to the Panther football program. He doesn't inherit a terrible team and should have a healthy Ray Graham to go against the Hokies.Remember Pitt only lost by 1 to a very good WVU team last year in Morgantown, beat S.Fla. by 27, and won at Louisville.Who knows what could happen here.

FSU - Florida s.t is back!! I know, I know. We here it every year. But could it be? I think these guys have the chance to really make a huge splash and regain some national power. How? Defense. These guys are loaded on the DL. These guys are solid all the way across the defense. But most important, this defense has some serious depth to it. Most people don't understand what it takes to take a team to next level. Take a good look at your Alabama's and LSU of the world. Yeah they have outstanding individual talent but what separates these guys from the rest is depth. When I look at this team 2 big things stick out to me. E.J Manual IMO is not a dependable QB. The guy makes bad decisions at crucial times and all ways seems to be banged up for whatever reason. The other thing is Clemson. Can this team keep up with the very highly skilled Clemson offense? Right now I think the edge goes to FSU. Why? Because this game is being played @ the Doak. That's the only reason. I want to know can this team run the ball as well cause last year the running game was non existing. Overall the schedule has some tough games on it. @ S. Florida, @ NCST, @ Miami and @ V.T. I think this team has to prove some things but I will say that I finally think these guys have the correct pieces in place now to go to the next level. Basically, the winner of the FSU vs Clemson game will probably be your conference champion.

Next up........Clemson

corely    You think your boys take a step back this year? I think you might be surprised to hear what I think about miss st.

- 29 -   Whats up my man ready for that season long challenge.... you and I are on the same page here with V.T. This might be one of the years that everyone will be shocked to see just how mediocre this V.T team will be.

pj    yeah man.... V.T will be taking a step back my friend.

Dugie   always good to see you my friend

Shark -  Whats up bro? You ready for the season yet?

Boom - Not one bit... I think we are better than last year... This teams has tons and tons of speed at the skill positions on offense... Russell is fitting in nicely this offense... it's more pass dominant now.  The ball is getting out of his hands very quick which takes a lot of pressure off the O-Line... The D will be very good... The D-Line is stacked and big... Cameron Lawrence, the teams leading tackler, anchors the LB's and the secondary is loaded with experience... which includes DB Johnathon Banks, one of the nations best DB's

The schedule is very light in the beginning... The big games are Auburn, Kentucky, and Tennessee... Aub and Tenn being at home... IF MSU wins those 3 games, they could be 7-0 going into the Bama game and have a lot of confidence going... I think worst case scenario MSU is 5-2 going into Bama game... But only 2 games I don't see MSU winning is Bama and LSU... both are on the road

Boom what's up buddy? Can't wait for this season will definitely be more active posting as I have enjoyed this hockey season with everyone here on Covers so can't wait for college football season to start.

Anyways I like Clemson this year to win the ACC. As usual I think Seminoles will have huge expectations and flop. EJ is not very good and that tough FSU defense last year struggled. As for your boys they showed signs of greatness last year. Think they are a young team But Taj and the receivers have tons of talent. VT shouldn't be a problem again this year as they looked very flat last year in my opinion and there QB wasn't very impressive. Think if Clemson can work on that defense they will be very dangerous.

Anyways look forward to your write ups and when you get to Texas don't be too brutal =)

yeahhhhhh

Football is on it's way back

as always Love reading your stuff Brother Boom

Looking at your ACC projections

Like UNC and Virginia to be much better this season ...

only thing I disagree with is Va Tech ... But who knows if they lose to Ga Tech week 1 they could free fall ....

Also ...real close to betting Clemson at 5-1 and both  UNC,UVA as small hedges 14-1/19-1 to win the ACC .....

Clemson - As most of you know this is my school. As any fan would, I love to pull for my own but I have always been critical at times and the first to point out what needs to happen. This years team IMO is loaded at the skill position more than any team in the country, on offense that is. These guys are bringing back Taja Boyd at 3900 yd passer from a year ago. A elite running back when healthy Andre Ellington. THE best wide receiving group in the country ( and that is not debatable ). Sammy Watkins and Nuke Hopkins are absolute beasts. IMO Nuke, actually looked better in the spring. The guy added a ton of muscle and speed. Overall this offense is not only good with individual talent, it's deep with skill players. The OL needs to show it can be dominate but I have to take coach Morris word as in he thinks this group is better than last years group. Defensively the last time we all seen this team team it was bad. But as most of us " mature " gamblers and fans know. It was one game. That's all it was. The new scheme in place with coach Venables ( which was a nice pick up from Oklahoma ) looks more like a team who runs to the ball and tackles well. All we know about this team is, will they respond? Will these guys play with that " chip " on their shoulder? The one thing that most didn't know from last years team was it had I think 55 freshman and sophomores on the roster. Do you know how crazy that sounds? Seriously. Wow. This team is still young but last years team was crazy young. And guess what? It showed up when they went on the road. Every time these guys went on the road with the exception of blasting V.T in lane stadium their youth showed up with them. This season with all that experience should prove that this team can make the next step. I put the best case at 12 - 0 for this team for a reason. There isn't a game on the schedule that isn't winnable. As I said in the FSU write up I think this game comes down to the game between these two schools on who will win the ACC. @ FSU, @ BC @ Wake ( on a Thursday ) are games where it will show if this team is ready to mature and make the next step. If this team beats FSU the 4th week of the season in Tallahassee.....Watch out.

next up.............NCST

you guys schedule was crazy brutal. IMO it had to be one of the toughest in the country. I agree with some of your points on your team...,I'll wait to tell you what I think when I get to your boys...

5-1 is a steal on Clemson.... Really look for them to take that next step.  Also loving the +2500 for BCS title.  12-0 is very doable for this squad

Good to see ya Boom, definitely one of the best reads in this forum.  Got any ideas how to help make the next 3 months pass by a little quicker?  Even spending the day on the golf course tends to go by slow when you're waiting for college football.

Hey, Boom_Boom. Your thread marks the official start of football preseason. No matter what rivalry falls by the wayside: TX vs A&M, West VA vs Pitt, at least this tradition is continuing.

The ACC schedule makers didn't do you any favors in the mid-week game. You play VT then only have 5 days to prep for WF? Most other conferences give teams a week and a half to prep for these games. (I noticed that since now...I guess...I'm supposed to be an ACC homer.)

The Wake Forest game looks like the perfect spot for Tajh to come down with "Brett Farve Syndrome" again and start tossing the ball to the opponent. I read one quote from him in spring where he sounded like he hasn't completely shaken the habit of making a boneheaded play here and there...

Do you expect Tajh to get it together in the fall?

Hotrod - Sup man...Good to see ya

Corely - Sammy will be suspended. I think the first 2 games.

Bense - Sup man. How is sparty gonna do? I have some interesting thoughts on them as well. I look forward to hearing what you think when I do their write up.

Train - Train?...who is this guy? Never heard of him......

Syracuse - Great to see you. I get excited too when the pre season write ups start...  Yeah, Taja will be fine. The guy really has a lot of talent. I look for another big year from him. You have any thoughts on the up coming season yet??? Would love to hear.

Double - This is Clemson University... he will be suspended. Clemson has always held their players accountable to their actions. I would be totally shocked to see him not be suspended.

Paldog - Thanks.... I was 57% up 47 units. 8 consecutive years gaining a pretty decent profit.
