So if you break it down like this...it's Shelby Miller and Nick Markakis for Jordan Walden and Jason Heyward who would have demanded a contract over $100 million for an unproven player.
Markakis is a solid player with great defense and a rocket arm. I can't complain about it.

I'm worried about my own team more than everyone else in the division. Every time we go into a season with question marks it always ends badly and I don't know what the rotation is going to consist of so Markakis was the least of my worries going into the season

Well he replaces the 2014 production of Heyward. He obviously offers less upside than Jason at this point but comes at a reasonable price. I like this signing in conjunction with the trade.

The O's got the best years out of Nick. The steady decline has begun with respect to his offensive numbers. As much as I will miss Nick's arm in right field I think the Orioles were wise in not tying up $44 million for 4 years.

I agree with Mike. It's a reasonable price for a player these days. He's no superstar, that's for sure. It's understandable to question the signing given where they stand after trading Heyward and talks of them trading Jup and Gattis because they could have tried to get an OF prospect in a package for those 2 and save them some money, too. The signing of Markakis says that they aren't throwing in the towel just yet. However...if that's the only move they make then it's still kind of questionable.
Either way...I don't think they will be struggle for too long. Come 2016-17 I think they'll be back on track. You see that lineup they had and you wonder how they were that bad because Jup, Gattis, Heyward and Freeman seem to be really good bats with Chris Johnson, Simmons and La Stella being serviceable but they just never figured it out.
Their pitching will always be good. Tehran, Miller, Wood, Minor and Hale can form a really good rotation while 4 of their top 5 prospects are pitchers, too. Not to mention they could still get a pitching prospect in return for Jup.
Peraza will probably play 2nd base now and he has a lot of promise and Bethancourt will be the catcher next season most likely. I'm not giving up on this team just yet. Next year may be a down season but they won't be down for long.

When will the uptons be gone, not soon enough for me as a lifetime 60plus years of being a braves fan.
One of or maybe both of the Upton's could be headed up your way to Seattle in a trade including Gattis..That's wat I'm hearing Down here in Braves country..Keep your fingers crossed.

If John Hart is able to move BJ Upton and not have to take on another teams horrible contract he should be given the 2015 executive of the year award now. I don't think there is a chance that he can pull it off.
