1) I love Tyrod's leadership skills, and his arm is very underrated. He can make most of the passes. If Flacco went down for a few games, I think we could get by OK. Tyrod is not just a "run-first" QB, he has an excellent arm, he can throw the deep ball.
2) But height is height, you can't fake it. It's very hard for a QB his height to make it in a dropback offense in the NFL. Also, the VT offense is somewhat limited because it is all predicated on field position... VT throws deep a lot, but they don't use the short and intermediate passing game too much because an interception on a short pass reverses field position, and Beamer is ALL ABOUT the field position and nothing else. As a result, Tyrod has very little experience with slants and crossing patterns and timing patterns like you have to throw in the NFL. I'm sure they work on these things in practice, but considering that there was no offseason last year due to the lockout, this is the first offseason that TT has even been exposed to those types of plays. So there is a learning curve there. Now he seems to be pretty smart, and I liked the fact that he developed significantly as a passer over his years at Tech, starting with the comeback drive vs Nebraska.
I think Tyrod could someday be a starter inthe NFL. Could he be a starter on an elite team that is a Super Bowl contender? Doubtful (I know we won it all with Dilfer so anything' spossible but these days it's pretty much elite QBs that win Super Bowls most years).
But he's going to have to gain some experience. No way should he be considered ahead of Flacco now. Flacco has a great arm, and surprising mobility in the pocket. Now he has been inconsistent at times, but it's hard to argue with the only QB in NFL history to win at least one postseason game in each of his first four years in the league, who was one dropped pass away from the Super Bowl last year and maybe one to two plays away from the SB the year before.
It's Flacco's job. I'm a big Tyrod fan and am rooting for him to be the main backup (we also have Curtis Painter in camp, who has more experience with an actual pro style offense). And, like I said, if we had to go with T-Mobile for a couple games during an injury I think we could get by. But Flacco is the starter and it's not even close.

Ike had some issues with alcohol, unfortunately. I hope he's managed to put that behind him, he seemed like a real nice kid.
