I  think I know the answer but am I  missing  anything?

Brees got  the  franchise  tag which allows the  saints to avoid offering him a long term  deal.  the  saints  can just  match the current top 5  QB's in  pay  but they dont  have  to  commit beyond a year at this point.

is  that  it?

Let's say he gets a career ending injury....he gets his $ for this year ($18M give or take).  If he gets an extension, he'll get $40M plus GUARANTEED (they have to pay him that no matter if he gets injured and has to retire).  Would you rather have $18M or $40M?

yes,  I  see it  that  way too.   also, he  had  an extremely productive year last  year ,,,  in  fact  setting  an  all time  season mark .

so,  if  he  doesnt  have  as stellar of a year,  it will  reflect in a  deal  1  year  from  now.    the  time to negotiate the long term contract is now when he  is  off his  very  best  year.

i  can  understand why he is  livid,,,,  by getting the franchise  tag,  he  cant  even negotiate.

"I've played under the franchise tag before back in 2005 (with the San Diego Chargers)," Brees said. "That ended with 13 anchors in my right shoulder and a 24 percent chance of playing football again. That didn't really work out too well for me. I've talked to the Saints about this many times. I think they definitely know my desire to have a long-term deal. I think they certainly hopefully want me to have that, as well. We will continue discussions and hopefully get a long-term deal done."

Drew Brees did  get  screwed once  by this franchise tag... i  see why  he doesnt  like it.

In reality, he is giving the Saints all the ammunition they need here. Not giving him a long term deal offers them protection if he gets hurt....something he has done in the past.

Of course he wants a long term deal.  Is that really good negotiating on his part:  Give me a long term deal because last time I was franchised, I got hurt and almost couldn't play again.

What he should be saying is, "I've been nothing but healthy during the course of my contract and I think I've earned a long term deal as I very much want to stay here."

Rather than remind them of how he got hurt, remind them of how healthy and productive he has been.  New Orleans did give him a 6 year, $60 million dollar deal to come over from SD and a LOT of people thought that was crazy considering his injury.  So he needs to remember that they stuck their neck out for him 6 years ago.  He rewarded them, but they still took the initial risk.

when all the other "insiders" said he would be signed i said for months he'd get tagged. he could've in his lockout settlement got the no franchise tag clause ala Reggie White. But Drew screwed the pooch. If making 15 million is a problem i hope to have that problem shortly

He got a nice number even with the franchise tag for a QB that will throw a couple of INT's a game.. IMO a good QB but far from great every game he gives you a chance for 2 or 3 picks as he trys to fit in way to many throws.. Check the stats.. He fell into the perfect system and is surrounded by play makers .. Put him on the Browns with their talent at WR and RB and O-line and he is average AT BEST !!!

This guy deserves to get a long term deal. Saints GM has got to be a total idiot saying Brees is "very good" but not "great"

Yeah. 71.2%, 5476 yards passing, horrible 46-14 td/int ratio is pretty much middle of the road...............I guess the Kiss Of Death was getting voted NFL Offensive Player Of The Year..........

Besides doing it all on the field, Brees also makes his home in The Big Easy. Katrina didn't help him, along with many others, in N.O. But this guy really helped the post-hurricane community, and is involved with many local charities. He has done much more than Mickey Loomis EVER will. This guy has gone out of his way to be a role model. No duis, drug busts, taking pictures of his junk, saying he wanted to punch his coach, GQ photo shoots, etc..............

I'm not saying the Saints are obligated to give him a long term deal. I'm just saying this guy has gone out of his way to help the Saints, is a Top Three Qb (if you don't think so, you're not paying attention), and wants to STAY. Pay the man.
