#10 Posted: 6/1/2006 12:12:36 AM OK, looked at last 20 years.
Will the final word contain an 'e' in it?
105 Yes -188 Risk To Win
106 No +170 Risk To Win
L20: 'Yes' went 13 - 7.
How many letters in the final word?
111 Over 10.5 letters -146 Risk To Win
112 Under 10.5 letters +129 Risk To Win
L20: 'Over 10.5' went 10 - 10.
Will winner be from West/East of Mississipi River?
113 West -108 Risk To Win
114 East -108 Risk To Win
L20: 'East' went 12 - 7 - 1
The '1' was due to kid living in St. Louis (too lazy to track down which side of river kid actually lived).
At this point I'm considering the 'Under 10.5' and the 'East' prop is looking pretty good.
Need to find out who the judges are this year before laying out any cash. Been burned before by a couple judges out trying to increase the TV ratings (at the direction of the commissioner's office of course).

#22 Posted: 6/1/2006 3:34:46 AM other props:
Will the winner be male or female?
101 Male -138 Risk To Win
102 Female +122 Risk To Win
L20: 'Male' went 11 - 9
(but could be 10 - 9 - 1...one kid was pretty androgenous looking and couldn't really tell male/female by name or picture)
Stay away from this one...history is pretty shaky:
Will the winner be wearing glasses?
109 Yes +194 Risk To Win
110 No -222 Risk To Win
L20: 'Yes' went 8 - 12.
Unless you can find archive pics of the kid actually winning the thing, it seems that in the post-game news conference, most of the girls will remove their glasses when being interviewed. Actual 'glasses worn in competition' could be as high as 11 - 9 in L20.

#23 Posted: 6/1/2006 3:41:57 AM Most of the early buzz concerns these two:
"One of the favorites for this year's competition is 12-year-old Samir Patel of Texas, who is both of Indian descent and home-schooled. He tied for second last year, a bump up from tying for third when he was only 9."
"Another speller to keep an eye on is Katharine "Kerry" Close of New Jersey, a public school eighth-grader who achieved the rare feat of making it to the nationals five times. She tied for seventh last year, beating 11th-place John Tamplin of Kentucky, the only other competitor to make a fifth appearance."
Vegas insiders are keeping their eyes peeled on that Patel kid. Spellers of Indian descent have won 5 of the last 7 competitions. |

#25 Posted: 6/1/2006 5:21:38 AM I remember watching the Bee last year- that Patel kid will take it this year. He's the Cy Young of spelling! There's no fear in his eyes...NONE! |
