Honest question: has anyone used either of these services in the past, or know someone who has, and has an opinion on the value paying for a service provides versus the good information gleaned from forums like this one? I've used this particular forum for six plus years now, and have done well with the input provided by others, however, I'm always curious what other good options are out there. Many thanks.

A few years back Dr. Bob was hugely popular and killing it....it was always interesting to watch the lines move after he released his plays on thursday afternoon.....not sure if he is nearly as big nowadays, he went through some tough periods.

When I first started out I got hustled by Jim Feist sports....I tried them for a weekend, and went 0-4.  0-3 on saturday and 0-1 sunday.  I took that as a clear sign and never bought picks again.

Best thing to do IMO is to do the work and check out a few of the respected cappers on here.

paying for picks is for chumps

the touts are running the biggest scam job ever. what they do is this.

they get 200 people to pay 100 bucks a pick. and they give half of them one side of the pick and the other half the other side. either way, they have 100 repeat customers + anyone they tell as well.

its such a bunch a garbage and i would advise entirely against it.

they have no more information than anyone else does.

Thanks guys, I feel the same way. When you read old articles from the WSJ discussing the success of Dr. Bob it makes you wonder if there is an edge worth paying for out there. I've always had a good experience in the covers forum with members like amd, rush and koaj. In the lead up to football season I always look at different angles and wanted to get an opinion from some others on this one.

If you have any other recommendations regarding cappers or sites, please share. Much appreciated.

Dr Bob had a system that worked for a couple years, until the books caught up to him.  His system had to do with calculating yards per play for teams after subtracting out garbage yards and fluke plays.

My advice to you is that you'll be better off finding a few cappers to fade than finding one to tail.

BOL to you this year.

RAS, or Right Angle Sports is pretty good in my opinion. Been following him now for 2 years in both CFB and CBB. He knows what he's doing and wins more than he losses. With him, you do have to be careful about the lines he posts, especially in CBB. He may post a line at -6.5 and it's -7 or 7.5 by the time you make the bet. Guess it means he's respected by the bookmakers. He also has a tendancy to fall in love with a team or two. Like last year in hoops he was all over TCU, Arizona State and some weird behind team like Deleware or something it seemed almost every week. He's certainly worth a look to see who he's on for a given week. Don't pay for his picks. You should be able to find them for free.

or the Gold Sheet.....both $8 or so and have a great deal of info
NOTE: use their RESEARCH...not their picks

*if you still insist on paying for picks...both offer cheap options...for $10-25 per week...

Thanks guys. Shout out to some other great cappers: Train, Whitemice, BEE, Macwestie, Gamehunter and Weeble. Lots of good dudes around this place. I'm sure I've left some off. Always appreciate everyone's insight.

If you don't want to pay (Powersweep is worth the 8 bucks a week), then most effective free options for research are

1.  CFBStats.com - the best stats website for NCAA Football.  You can spend an hour looking at different split stats.   (FBSchedules.com is best website for future schedules)

2.  Local media.  The tricky thing here is that the local media can be huge homers, slight homers, down the middle, or even anti-homers (never give team any credit).  I have found that coaches love to talk, and they don't really have a reason to like, so you can find out a lot about the team from the coach.  There are webpages with links to all the local media.  This is one of the best resources because very few people take the time to read. 1 or more articles a day about all 120+ teams, especially when most of the articles are written by hacks.

3.  Covers - Covers can be a good or bad resource.  If you can be scientific about collecting picks from the forums (keep record for each poster, and fade or tail), that can be the most effective way to make picks.  But what usually happens, is that you will get a long with a few cappers, but a few other cappers will rub you the wrong way, then you wind up tailing your friends and fading your enemies.

4.  Yahoo Team Reports.  Yahoo is not a great website anymore, but they do a good job with the Team Reports, when they are up to date.

5.  Line movement websites.  I think these are worth looking at, but I think they are just a small piece of the puzzle.  I do not think sites that tell you what percentage of bets are on Team A are worth looking at, because they have no reason to be honest, and there is no way you can catch them lying about their figures.

6.  Video - this is now an option with DVR.  Soon there will be a pay website you can go to to watch condensed games.  You need to be careful watching video, because just because a team makes a couple nice plays while you are watching doesn't necessarily mean anything.  And most teams will have a game or 2 in a season.  An analytical capper may not watch any video, but a subjective capper will base all his picks on what he sees on the screen, and not care about a box score.  Here is the best website for what channel a game will be on.  I will watch 10+ hours of football on Saturday, but I never watch any replays.

Looks like powersweep is a must. I also totally agree on the local media perspective. I've found that covers does a good job of listing local articles in the matchup section for each game.

I'll check out @smartbets, but as I'm sure you can imagine, I'm skeptical. Thanks for the input though.

Scamdicappers?

I get emails from this one guy who runs half a dozen different sites. He's very sneaky on tracking his picks, too. If he has a bad day or week, he will conveniently leave it off his 'tracking' page.

Pointwise is a good newsletter for information. They release 2 college #1 rated plays every week that are close to 63% past 2 years and a #2 rated play that went 23-9 (72%) last 2 years also . I always do my own capping and then check on those . Last year PW's MNF pick went 12-5. Their plays coinsided with mine and were hit good.

Mathmatical Rate Guide PW also has a mathmatical rate guide section listing all teams that are to play that week that will give you their computer generated  difference between teams. I compare PW's mathmatical rate guide with my line and also have compared some of their big  mathmatical rate guide fav's -30 -38 -42  with the actual Vegas/sportsbooks.

For example: ( as a guide only) In previous years PW would have Okl State - Alabama - TCU  and some  other heavy hitters  favored by 30 /38/42 vs the bottom tier teams  on the guide. The actual Vegas line would be like 25 /28 /34 respectivly. This would show me the Vegas line to be soft. These game finals would be big blowout 42-7 / 52-14 / 62-3 games. I would isolate and list all the big spreads (25+) the rate guide would  show every week and even put 3 in a 10pt teaser. I only use home fav's for this not road favs. Team must be playing@ home. Even better when a heavy hitter is off a road loss coming back home w. a big #

You could almost guarantee this year a heavy hitter team like USC Alabama LSU Oregon could be favored on the PW mathmatical rate guide by 22 /30 or 35 and the vegas line would be about 5-7 points lower. Meaning ROUT!

I used to go the one in the 1500 block of Main Street when I worked downtown - it's no longer there.  I thought the place at Webb Chapel and Forest had closed, so I go to Parkit Market across 75 from SMU,

My goal is to be up at the end of the year.

I'm gonna bet over 200 games total in both college and nfl. I expect to lose at least 40% of those bets.

Goal is 60% but I can live with 57-59%

They have nothing to lose!! if they win you pay! if they lose you pay, in some cases.... Always buy guaranteed picks so you dont get burned and pay for losers!! Theses forum threads and free picks provided are probably as reliable as the "pros"

IN MY OPINION, Vegas is the only REAL pro!!!

That's the classic scam, but very few can get away with that in the age of the Internet.

Dr. Bob is impeccably honest, and he gives the same picks to everyone.  You won't gain a big name in the business without operating that way.

He's been down in recent years, but just when you don't expect someone to do well, that's probably when they'll kick butt...

Wall Street Journal did an article on Dr. Bob. I would only tail him...the rest are coin flippers.
