This whole area has become a war zone, unbelievable. Fuckin red shirts and army are seriously clashing now. Thailand on the brink of civil war.

Just took a motorbike through the heart of the city. That was crazy, what are usually the busiest noisiest streets you've ever seen are totally deserted, you could hear a pin drop. Troops with rifles posted everywhere.

1. Is the water drinkable?
hell no.....best to drink bottled water like in most countries.......USA included

2. Have Americans 'disappeared' over there recently?
not any more dangerous than USA....less than most places here......tourist are catered to and protected.....few incidences lately in Phuket it seems......but...if i wandered drunk just south of downtown Dallas at 2 AM .....i wouldn't last more than 10 minutes or so

3. Why the intense fascination with ladyboys?
as in .....why are there so many?....that's a deep one.....far beyond ..... the scope of covers
.
4. What is the primary faith over there?
    Buddhism....Thai style
5. If everyone knows Americans have money, why would you not fear being robbed?
no fear ....just caution... as you would WHEREVER you go...that you are surrounded by very poor people....money belt.....waist wallet....+++

6. How are the public restrooms? Bearable? Do you squat over a hole reminiscent of something like the outhouse in Slumdog Millionaire? Can you breathe?
in city ....same as here....in country...."squat"  toilets.......> hole in the floor
pollution in Bangkok is better ...but still BAD

7. Does a mother and father disown their ladyboy son?
pisses father off ....but no in general

8. Do women get in unfair fist-fights/hair-pulling matches with ladyboys over potential cliental?
not if smart....ladyboys might fight each other.....(not competing for same clients usually)

9. Is prostitution the biggest revenue generator?
NO dude.....contrary to what my boy sfgiantswin says....Thailand far from 3rd world....tourism itself is only 5-6% of GNP .....sex trade is major part of that...most tourists in Thailand are women......50% is agriculture...
90% or more of prostitution is local....(that's where the disease risks are)....

10. Are mosquitos a problem (i.e. do you have to sleep with netting over your bed)?
only in rural areas....minor issue in tourist areas......

* what makes Thailand a great place to go (besides the obvious)....is that the MAN is still the BOSS......the duty of the chick is to take care of the fuckin MAN......DIRECTLY opposite of what you currently find in the US.....(unless loaded of course)....when not banging everything that moves...if you get to know the people....and their culture...> it's really great....they will love your behind.....for free....kinda
last visit....took me awhile .....lol.....but did just that....went north of Chiang Mai (very cool) ....er.....kinda met a VERY nice 20 yr old chick working at a temple....invited me home for dinner with her family....next day took me all over ......riding elephants....went into a cage with tigers....(after MANY drinks).....smart?...

funny? ....note....er.....if indeed Shaqlike
(some).....will be SCARED of the black man...
a few massage places and bars are blatantly on the racist side....not that they dislike the black man...but believe the potential for "punishment" is too great...some are in fact Japanese only..they say..."me want 4 by 4" (or close to that)....> 4 minutes....4 inches............................
note:  many tourist bars do not allow THAIS to enter.........

 neat....RJ

Gonna have to go with some of RJ's answers here and not go to a place like this...

The reason I thought prostitution was the main revenue generator was because I thought THAT is what drives the tourism (but I did misremember the agriculture portion which is obvious)

Why would people go here?

American, European, Asian, African, Australian families can't go to a place like this in a million years!

So it seems, it's all single men looking for 'action'...

Incorrect assumption?

YES....wrong

majority go to experience the culture and to take advantage of great deals in shopping / dining / lodging ++...MOST tourists are women.....TONS of young kids going to 6 day rave parties..2 of my friends have gone there for open-heart surgery....(have cash to go anywhere they want)....2 of top 10 hotels in the world are in Bangkok...Thailand is one of few places in the world where they adapt to YOU .....the helpless tourist that doesn't speak a WORD of their language....(they must take 6 years of English to get ready for your visit)....most didn't study too hard it seems....

If the adventurous type....that sees travel more as an educational experience.......you will love Thailand and most of SE Asia...if like many .....and view travel as entertainment and can't stand being inconvenienced in ANY way  .....it ain't for you....(most of people know are in this category)....flight is too long....and it is WAY too hot

If just want cheap action....better to go to country much closer....DR.....Costa Rica....Mexico.....further /more cash >> Colombia....Argentina.....Brazil +++

* Blackbeards Resort in Puerto Plata, DR... great starter trip....(ALL inclusive hotel).....great golf courses.....car washes where you can bang chicks.... hell yeah

My aunt and cousin were Sheila and Darin Damude... Unfortunately, this is why I will never go to the UK or Thailand.

For personal reasons, I will never travel to the UK or Thailand... even if it's just out of respect for my family.
