Best poker show in TV by a mile.

200k buy-in/ 500k max

http://tv.gsn.com/shows/highstakespoker/

If you want to improve your game through watching poker on TV, although the improvement will ultimately only be slight, watching cash-game hands is the way to do it and this is the show to watch.

Looks like Justin Duhamel (WSOP 2010 champ) is gonna be sitting at these table some of the shows, taking himself from the top of the poker mountain to the bottom of the river in the ravine like the fish these pros will turn him into.

No more Gabe Kaplan unfortunately. Loved him. Best poker commentator on TV. Replaced by former SNL cast member Norm McDonald. Not happy about that but I'll give him a chance.

My favorite high stakes poker hand to whet your palate:

8pm est and 11pm if you miss it

Here's more info...(lots of top pros missing because of conflicts of interest with pokersite affiliation)

This season will bring together a mix of top professionals and wealthy amateur players, each eager to take the others' money in a high-stakes no-limit hold 'em cash game. The game features two-time World Series of Poker Main Event Champions-Doyle Brunson, making his seventh HSP appearance, and Johnny Chan, who is making only his second HSP appearance-along with the reigning World Champion, 23-year-old Jonathan Duhamel, who won $8.9 million for his World Series of Poker Main Event victory in November 2010.

Fan favorites Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, and Barry Greenstein all participated, as they have done for each of the previous six seasons. Other familiar names from past seasons include David Peat (Season 5), Andrew Robl (Season 6), Phil Laak (Seasons 2-6), Jason Mercier (Season 6), Haralabos Voulgaris (Season 4), Phil Galfond (Seasons 4 & 6), and amateur Mike Baxter (Seasons 4-5).

Season 7 of HIGH STAKES POKER is as much about the newcomers-both professional and amateur-who will be making their HSP debut as it is about the returning veterans. Professional player Vanessa Selbst, who had a tremendous year on the tournament circuit in 2010, is only the third woman ever to appear on the show. A total of six new amateurs will also participate: Robert Croak, the creator of SillyBandz; Bill Klein, a retired businessman and philanthropist; billionaire entrepreneur Phil Ruffin, who owns the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, as well as many other successful ventures; Julian Movsesian, a life insurance executive whose company specializes in serving high-end clients; Bill Perkins, president of a private equity and venture capital firm; and Erik Boneta, a watch dealer and wholesaler who specializes in Rolex watches.

The full player line-up for the Season 7 of HIGH STAKES POKER is:
Mike Baxter
Eric Boneta
Doyle Brunson
Johnny Chan
Robert Croak
Jon Duhamel
Antonio Esfandiari
Phil Galfond
Bill Klein
Phil Laak
Jason Mercier
Julian Movsesian
Daniel Negreanu
David Peat
Bill Perkins
Andrew Robl
Phil Ruffin
Vanessa Selbst
Bob Voulgaris

Kara Scott begins her second season as co-host of HIGH STAKES POKER. Scott, an expert poker player and poker journalist, was the only woman to finish in the money in both the 2008 and 2009 World Series of Poker Main Events, and only the second woman in history to do so in back-to-back years. She also finished second in the 2009 Irish Open in Dublin.

Featuring a minimum cash buy-in of $200,000 and a maximum buy-in of $500,000, HIGH STAKES POKER is the premiere cash game in the history of television. For the seventh season, the blinds were $400/$800 with a $100 ante. Straddles were frequent and often multiple. Several players were felted, so rebuys and add-ons were prevalent.

Friendly ( hopefully ) reply:

1. My favorite hand was Ivey all in with five high;
2. Norm seems confused and I really miss Gabe;
3. Negreanu is an overrated narcissist
4. What was Doyle thinking tossing queens ?

Looking forward to the show. Hate the thought of the year without Gabe.

Halfway through the show and already hate the season lol. Selbst blows balls and should stick to tournaments. Since when does Peat have the money to play HSP (is he staked)? Norm is ehhh.

It's just my favorite hand, not the best hand.

I love when Booth puts out the 3 bricks of cash. That's a middle-class American's house value.

The tell?

He acted WAY to strong. The money served as a barrier to fear of being called. As you know, when we push all-in for the meager sums we play for, we usually act as calm and meek as possible, so as not to disturb the caller.

But for that amount of money, I can easily see Ivey folding and waiting for a better spot, as he is the best at the table by a mile.

Yes I have pushed my money in at times, wanting to be called, but I will only do this to a cocky player who will be overcome with greed.

Amazing play by Booth there (who got swindled for $1.5 million in the Ultimate Bet scandal by the way...he still hasn't recovered).

Norm's performance last night? A respectable 6 of 10. He was a bit lost at times (as he admitted he would be in the article) and some of the jokes fell flat.

Gabe was a 10 though. There was no voice on TV I'd rather here that mixed humor and poker knowledge other than Gabe's.

1.Great hand. Top 3 bluffs ever on TV given it was a 5 bet out of position on Lex!

2. Agree to a certain extent

3. Overrated? He is now. He wasn't in 2004/2005 but his is in 2011. He simply can't win against these online pros and the other top pros at the felt only (Doyle, Barry, Ivey, Lederer) are clearly better than him. He only has an advantage against the billionaires and WSOP champs who want to throw their money around.

4. Don't understand that play at all.

I liked it and I still think it is the best poker show on TV despite the alterations.

1. Your Selbst comment?

I disagree. This girl CAN sit with those pros. She's probably the worst player there outside of Antonio, but her aggressiveness is admirable.

Can't see why she would push on an amateur who couldn't get his money in fast enough with a raise out of position. That is usually a sign of weakness at lower limits but not at this table. This is 200K/500K min/max buy-in. These businessmen know what they are up against and know the sums being thrown around here. A poor play and bad misread that cost her 200K+.

2. Peat allegedly does well online although I've seen him lose several monster pots on both Poker After Dark and The Big Game. As a matter of fact, I don't remember him winning much at all.

HSP probably called him due to his name recognition, the FTP dispute and resulting lack of named players, and his ubiquity on other poker show cash games coupled with his unpredictability. This is guy not afraid to shove with any amount.

3. I love how the billionaires refuse to run it twice on all-ins. The pros get uncomfortable REAL fast! It's the right move by the way. If you are a favorite post-flop (they were) you don't lessen your chances of scooping the whole pot by running it twice. They appeared to by counseled on this topic.

4. Bill Klein - Some billionaire businessman.

He not only gives what he wins to charity, but matches what he loses and gives that amount as well! At this table....??? Wow...

5. Norm's best line:

Barry says: "Doyle beat cancer" and then mentions he did it when they didn't have the treatments they have today.

Norm: Ya know Doyle beat cancer when it meant somethin'! Not like these kids today beatin' cancer...

6. Why is Antonio at the table. He is a nit that talks a lot and I believe he's been on almost every season? His talking gets him on the show??? He CANNOT tangle with any of these guys for any real amount of money so why give him a seat for being a chatterbox?

I was just going to post this about Norm taking over for Gabe.

I don't like it either. Gabe was my favorite, followed by Mike Sexton.

I just finished watching the first show. Norm wasn't bad.

I'm not a fan of Vanessa Selbst either. I remember seeing her at the final table of an all ladies WPT tournament, and she was a complete unprofessional twat.

agree with pretty much everything. selbst does stink imo and so does brunson. brunson is just like antonio... on the show for their face and who they are.
