My Aussie friend told me years ago about the never-ending feud between Union and League in Australia.  And then he said the never-ending feud between Aussie Rules and Rugby.

He said his take was, all of those sports are great and Australians should just learn to love them all and not banter back and forth which one is better.

I said, we as Americans know that feeling because we drown in sport every single day.  I also said that is probably the main reason why I didn't understand the constant arguments Australians have between League and Union, Rugby and Aussie Rules.

garbage, I love all three.  And, for the record, I think Australian Rules is one the coolest, most unique sports on the planet.  As a huge hockey fan, I fell in love with it at first sight as a young child because it has all the same appeal.  Tough team sport played by tough blue-collar guys, fast-paced, heavy hits (not as much nowadays ), and rabid fan bases who wear their team's colors to the grounds.  Not to mention team songs and anthems.  Very much like NHL hockey!

Anyway, I'm off my soapbox.  I worked 14 hours today so I am a babbling mess.

you would hope so being finals.

also that was perfect timing. but people dont view AFL on tv cause they actually go the games and support the code. maybe all the NRL diehards should get off their behind and go to the game. support the code. but once again (barring foxsports) not 1 NRL game has been shown live in WA.
and also seeing as free to air and fox share the rights to AFL not as many games are being aired through fox live. we will see what happens next year when all AFL games are shown live through the country bro.

If you are going to make claims then back it up with facts

as much as I hate to agree with rostos he is 100% correct - NRL outrates AFL on both free to air and fox

Check out free to air numbers Australia wide, not just capital cities (which brainwashed AFL fans love to quote). Its Sydney, Brisbane, Newcastle and the Hunter, Gold Coast, Canberra, Sunshine Coast, Central and North Qld, etc. The AFL propaganda machine know this, which is why they only quote selected (ie capital city) numbers.

And if you want to talk about viewing numbers, in Sydney Inspector Morse repeats on 7two outrated the combined viewing on both Fox and Ten of a swans/geelong game one saturday LINK

here are the ratings for last week for pay tv

and fox are putting on an afl channel for one reason - subscribers. The afl numbers are no where the nrl numbers, so they need a hook to get subscribers. There would be no need for an NRL channel if the viewers are already there

It's a typical Victorian thing - so shallow and insecure that they have to compare themselves to sydney

And to get back to original point the problem with the AFL is that the talent level is spread too thin.

There are squads of 38+6 (?), with 17 and now 18 teams. That means there should be nearly 800 first grade quality AFL players. There is not. There are not 800 players worthy of playing AFL, nor is there 800 NRL players, 800 soccer players, 800 cricket players, etc

With the length of the game the difference in talent levels shows through more. Its why the top cricket teams can nearly always win tests, but not always 20/20's

It will only get worse. More 100+ point thrashings. The talent pool does not exist to justify 18 teams

But you won't read thst in the Herald sun or hear it on SEN. It's illegal down south to criticise AFL

Maybe to stop the big winning margins the AFL can change their rules

- bring in the off side rule
- scrap the point for missing
- make the goals smaller
- make the use of hands illegal

and call it soccer

your point would have credibility if the difference in crowd numbers equals the difference in tv viewers. Sadly, you are clutching at straws.

Some of the figures appear wrong but some seem right.

Does everyone know that the CEO of News LTD, is an owner of the Melbourne Storm, part Owner of the NRL, part owner of Fox Sports.  No chance for bias or selective reporting there...

That actually puts the NRL at a disadvantage when negotiating broadcast rights. The only plus they have is that because NRL is such a huge part of Foxtel's revenue they will have to overpay for the NRL broadcast rights. If Foxtel only got 20 or 30% of its revenue (NRL viewers) rather than what is probably 80% then they would bid lower for NRL rights because 10 and 7 are tied into the AFL broadcast rights leaving only channel 9 to bid against.

Yes but part of the problem here is the cost of tickets and the changing cultural landscape. Migrants come here from countries that only understand cricket or where their parents had no time or interest in sport. The other factor is the friggin cost.

$700 - Swans AFL Family Package is a bargain against a $1200+ - NBL Family Package (non nose bleed) for NBL is crazy.

Baseball is around $1000 for a family which is just amazing given it low profile in Sydney, let alone Australia.

Tickets to individual games can also be crazy rugby it is $40-$60 per ticket whereas the big bash it is $20 an adult and free for children (who sign up to the free cricket association membership).

That's another thing I don;t understand.  Season ticket packages for NRL and AFL squads seem dirt cheap to me.  $700 for a Swans Family Package sounds like the bargain of the century to me., especially since the Aussie Dollar is now worth more than the American-Chinese Monopoly Paper.  $1 AUS = .93 US Cents.

Last time I went to an NFL game, I paid $750 for my 5th Row seat.  NFC Championship game, ONE GAME.  $50 more than entire Swans family package for a full season.

$40-$60 dollars for a NRL ticket seems massively reasonable to me, especially since most people would probably spend that getting sloshed in the local pubs anyway.

So, what am I missing here?  Are annual salaries generally lower than in the U.S.?  Are Australians way more reluctant to pay high dollar for sporting tickets?

Someone fill me in please.

I wasn't picking on you individually, or actually anybody for that matter, just throwing out a conversation me and my mate had many, many years ago that seems to have appeared again in this thread.

Not anymore, News has ceased part ownership of the NRL...

Look at how good the state of the game is at the moment even with the inefficient structures of the game and all the conflicts of interests within the game.....Now that we have an independant structure which will take effect in October, imagine where the game will be in 5 years.......

Cost of a Finals ticket at $60 is too pricey?

Holy crap.

NFL exhibition tickets go for more than that.

At $60, it would be the bargain of the century here for the NFL.

Can someone explain this as I ask above?
