I want a freak to win the crown, so I don't fee too bad. Would have love to see him try it though. Really no love affair with the horse, like SJ or BB.

what would really be terrible is if the horse won the race mostly becasue of juice and the kid really didn't have to a lot to do with.

While I don't think that's the case, I just go back to feling bad for Gutierrez. That scene afer the derby when he was in tears is something to remember.

we now know the fraud that BIG BROWN was. Just take a look at the slop he's produced since he hit the shed.

I rarely post in here, but I'm an avid horse fan and follower.  I don't buy any of the fishy / conspiracy speculation in this case.  The ridiculous new NY racing regulations re: nasal strips, oats... were pronounced 2 weeks ago now.  O'Neill wasn't going to wait till the day before the race to defect.  And he wasn't going to defect at all.  Way too much at stake for him to pull out voluntarily, and way too much at stake for him to try anything stupid with the horse during the week.  Let's not forget that he had the best horse in here.  The horse had a warm ankle after his jog yesterday.  They went to the track early this morning to see how it was responding.  It wasn't better.  Simple as that.  And he wasn't just scratched, he was retired.

A freak to win the crown? Secretariat wasn't a freak until the Belmont. We don't know what this horse would have done.

They did show close ups of the leg. The injury is legit.

I'm just devastated.

JAY..can't argue with you about NY rules. I am a horse owner and we race in NY (not regularly, but I am licensed there), as well as 4 or 5 other states. NY regs are the toughest by far and one reason is that they really discourage out of state folks with mid-range horses ($65k-$125 runners) from coming in unless it's a well known trainer with excellent stock.

That said, there seems to be something more to this. I hope I am wrong, but with O'Neill, "if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck...."

Really a sad time. I would have bet against him but still would have liked to see him give it a try and become the triple crown winner since '78.

We (book I work at) actually opened him at +180 to win it and it had dropped down to +135.
