#26 Posted: 3/1/2012 9:24:37 AM Latest scuttlebutt is that the passage of the Comartin bill is basically down to the rubber stamp stage. It has to be signed off by the Senate and then can go to final reading in the House of Commons for another signoff. It looks like no real stiff lobbying against it anymore. Thet're now talking at Caesars about late April. They will probably need a bigger room and may move to another room on the 2nd floor. |

#27 Posted: 3/2/2012 11:23:15 AM The 3rd reading at the house has been moved up to today at 130pm! Moved up approx 4-6 weeks in time after Comartin swapped slots with a colleague.
Should be interesting. Trying not to get my hopes up.....as it still needs to be passed as a law.....and they still would have to put up competitive lines.

#28 Posted: 3/5/2012 9:10:57 AM Solid... almost there. Time to re-new my passport.
If they got it up for march madness they would instantly see the profit of it. I hope they are trying to get it done before then, if they were smart they def would be.

#29 Posted: 3/5/2012 9:41:23 AM Regarding taxes how does this work in canada? I am very unfamiliar with tax laws in your country?
Does canada tax gambling winnings? If so what are the limits, specifically applied to sports betting?

#32 Posted: 3/6/2012 1:34:54 PM A Conservative has agreed to be the primary sponsor in the Senate. That increses the chances of passage ten fold.
As far as March Madness, Ain't gonna happen. I would count on being able to get down by football season.
They keep talking about being competitive with Vegas. Hopefully that will include decent lines.

the problem is they know to attract the canadian market they have to make lines competitive with the rest of the industry. It will be more convenient for some but not for others. I think they are more relying on the travel coming in from america as most states with a sizeable sports betting market are very close to the border. They will also get the canadian bettors who don't like posting up online and waiting a while for their money.
Football season would be good though. I doubt its something we see for baseball season.

#36 Posted: 4/3/2012 5:00:05 PM Latest word from Comartin's office is "early summer". So maybe by CFL season which kicks June 29. This seems optimistic tho.

You don't pay taxes on gambling winnings in Canada no matter what the amount. Bigbill has his head up his behind as per usual. 10k is the lamount at which you must make a declaration to US customs upon your return to the US or risk seizure of your cash. Nothing stopping you from opening a Canadian bank account for safe keeping I guess. |

#40 Posted: 6/14/2012 1:29:47 PM Just got a call returned and the bill is on schedule to be passed in the next couple weeks. Just before the Senate summer recess. Then it will be up to Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and Caesars to get it ramped up as soon as possible. There will be plenty of incentive to hurry, as B.C. and N.J. look ready for some football! |

#45 Posted: 8/24/2012 5:27:03 PM I think it's very much alive for sometime after Sep 17. Right now BC has revamped their website (playnow.com) to be ready for single-game. They got the software from PaddyPower, an Irish book. So they're in the starting blocks just waiting on the removal date for the antiquated legislation. Here in Ontario it looks like they're trying to go to school on a putt by letting either/both NJ and BC go 1st. They're actually going to let Club Alouette have a racebook here in Windsor as of Sep 1, according to the latest rumor. That's because they don't have a room big enough for the influx of extra race and sports bettors right now. So Club Alouette fills in until Caesars Windsor decides to start on renovating a larger room. And I don't think they're even going to start planning for that until the final signoff by the senate is official. |
