#1 Posted: 1/30/2012 8:34:20 PM This is the first hand in a tournament, you just sat down.
You are on the button in a table of 9 people, tournament. Opening bettor raises 3 times the big blind, two seats over a re-raise to double that raise.. a third bettor, next to you, raises to all-in. You peek at your 2 cards and sqeeze out two ladies QQ..
Do you, Call or Fold ? |

#4 Posted: 1/31/2012 2:24:40 AM Is it a MTT or Sit and Go?
If Its a MTT - Insta fold.
If Its a SnG - hesitation, but still fold. |

#7 Posted: 1/31/2012 4:18:53 PM You are way behind.
The guy who probably had the best hand in the guy who min raised the original raise.
I'd say, Original raiser has AK, 2nd raiser has AA, third raiser has AK suited or KK and then you have QQ. You also have to realize that you still have 2 people behind you to act.
If this exact situation played out 100 times. Your QQ would win the pot roughly 10-15 times. Terrible odds for the first hand.
Remember, you can't win a tourny on the first hand, but you sure as hell can lose it. |

That exact situation happened to me in about 185 people tournament, on the first hand.
After much deliberation, I folded my Q Q. The blinds then folded to the raisers also.
....The first raiser who had J J, (he folded too, and after told me what he had because he was bummed out about it )... the re-raiser had A K suited ( diamonds ) he called. The all-in raiser obviously had A A
Flop came K- 9- 3 rainbow turn was a Q, ( I was sick ) the river was a 10. no flushes
K-9-3-Q-10.. The first bettor with J J would have made a straight, but he folded to the re-rasier and a all-in raise.
earthWake, that is exact the conclusion I came too. If I was on the bubble, or short stacked, or even the chip leader by a wide margin, I would have jumped on it.
AA took down the pot. Hmm Hmm Hmm. |

#10 Posted: 1/31/2012 5:10:25 PM It was a good fold, regardless.
I recently played a $200 buy in, 85 person MTT.
Top 9 pay - Chip avg was 45k, largest stack was 100k. I had 75k
Got my AA cracked by AQ suited. Flush on the river.
So sick, I got 13th. If I win that pot I take down easily over 3k.
Sucks, thats poker. still fkin sucks tho |

#11 Posted: 1/31/2012 7:35:43 PM Yeah earthWake, getting AA cracked hurts.
It's strange how I get weird hands on the first hand of a tournament.. Let me tell you about one more that happened a few years ago...
Opening on a $200. buy in tourney. I'll never forget this one.
I'm in 3rd position with 7-6 clubs.. This guy in first postion bets, about 3 times the big blind. First hand, so I figure, what the heck not many chips, so I call.. One other guy calls.
3 players to the flop.
Flop comes, 8-5-4 rainbow..Whoa.
The initial raiser, GOES ALL-IN ! with pocket K-K..
I look back at my hand to see if I'm seeing things correctly, to be sure I had a straight, ( I go over it slowly in my mind, 4--5--6--7--8 ) trying not to count on my fingers, lol ). I CALL. The other caller had pocket 8-8. He calls with a set.
Turn up the cards. Turn comes A .. River a J
8-5-4-A-J
I take down the pot. However, I finished 26th or 28th. Can't remember, But I know I didn't cash. |

#12 Posted: 2/1/2012 4:46:02 AM damn yea suited connectors are where its at.
I recently had a hand in a 2/5 cash game where I had 4/5 of hearts.
Limped to me on the button (4 or 5 ppl in the hand) I bump it to $20.
Flop comes. A-9-10 rainbow..checked around to me, I bet 55, get a few callers.
turn comes 2..checks around to me, I check (I have a reputation for checking big hands on the turn, if you think about it..it is a very smart play, you almost always induce your opponents to bet.)
River. 3, giving me the nuts. guy bets 100. dude pops it to 220, I shove for roughly 400 and get a call..was a good night.
I love talking poker, wish there was more ppl here who did. |
