What should he have done? There was good dialogue between the candidates. Isn't that the goal?
I think he did a fine job. Moderators are like referees...when they do their job you barely their names.

Please, stiln you don't want to get started with me.
The reason Mr. Lehrer let things go is because they were talking about the biggest issue in regards to importance and simply going by the book as you suggest and moving on to the scheduled topics would be anti climactic. Somthing in which I'm sure you know all too well.
Personally, I hate it when people go by the book in all aspects of life.
Think about it pumkin.
"The Book" was written for mindless drolls that lack the ability to think for themselves. I'll spell that out for you in more simple terms. "THE BOOK" was written for the least capeable amongst us that need every minute of instruction spelled out for us.
Please, stiln you don't want to get started with me.

Actually Im just going to say that it is mostly liberals that seek a scapegoat that say lehrer did a poor job.
I didn't count but I've seen on the net that Obama actually had 4 minutes more of talk time then Romney.
You won't win with your hardline approach in regards to rules. Surely there are rules and law that were made that need to be followed.
There are also rules that were put in place for a single intention that have an unintended consequence.
People that can think for themselves end up following the rules without even seeing the rules to begin with.
Some people don't need to be told to respect others property or person. Others require constant reminder.
Ever been at a job where the instructions dictate that you do your job one way and after you think about it you have a better, more efficient way of doing the same thing. Stupid people will stop you in your tracks and remind you that that isn't the way you were instructed to do that. Less ignorant people will watch you and commend you for using your head to find the best way to accomplish that same thing. Some dickheads will act like the stupid person and then claim your idea as theirs when they get the chance.
Perhaps Im wasting internet ink and you've always been the one that always followed the next guy.
I can tell you that wasn't me for sure.

Radio host and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday he disagrees with the criticism being heaped upon Jim Lehrer, telling listeners of his show that the debate moderator did a “great job.”
“I thought Lehrer did a great job of allowing the candidates to control the pace of the debate. And some have criticized that. I think that’s exactly the right thing,” Huckabee said on “The Mike Huckabee Show.” “And here’s my feeling — Jim Lehrer is not running for president. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are. We really don’t care so much about what the anchor thinks or how he feels.”
Huckabee said he liked the moderating last night because Lehrer “did not make the debate about himself.” Voters don’t really care about what the moderator thinks or feels — they simply want to see the dynamic between the two candidates and the answers each gives, he told listeners.
“And from my perspective, and I’m saying this as a person who’s been on that stage very frustrated with moderators who thought it was all about them, and I sometimes wanted to say, ‘If you want that much time on the stage, Mr. Moderator, why don’t you become a candidate?’ So I want to say Jim Lehrer, I thought, acquitted himself well and kept to the topics and kept it on pace, but didn’t let his outline and his agenda overrule that of the candidates, which was for me a good thing,” Huckabee said

Even Lawrence Odonnell agreed for the same reason.
