have a go, try it for 24hour

go without media

give up your cell phone, iPod, television, car radio, magazines, newspapers and computer (i.e. no texting, no Facebook or IM-ing)?

Could you do it?  Is it even possible?

study conducted by the International Center for Media & the Public Agenda (ICMPA) asked 200 students at the University of Maryland, College Park to abstain from using all media for 24 hours.

MEDIA IS ABOUT INFORMATION

Students reported in this study that while they missed their music and their movies and their TV programs, they found that going media-free resulted in a greater, all-encompassing loss: “I believe that those who are not tied to this system are missing something,” one student wrote. “They are missing information.”  And  information, they discovered, was a precious commodity – one that they used to define themselves in comparison to their peers. One student said he realized that he suddenly had “less information” than “everyone else,” regardless of whether that information involved “news, class information, scores, or what happened on Family Guy.”

Students also expressed their awareness that information connected them to a larger world, beyond their circle of friends.  One student wrote of finally logging on to the computer after going media-free and learning about the earthquake in Chile. A social network site directed her to news sites that gave her more information about the disaster. “Those who aren’t connected through media probably have no idea about certain things going on in the world,” she wrote.

What did they learn by foregoing media for 24 hours?

That they cared about what was going on among their friends and families; they cared about what was going on in their community; they even cared about what was going on in the world at large. But most of all they cared about being cut off from that instantaneous flow of information that comes from all sides and does not seemed tied to any single device or application or news outlet.

Students show no significant loyalty to a news program, news personality or even news platform.  Students have only a casual relationship to the originators of news, and in fact don’t make fine distinctions between news and more personal information. They get news in a disaggregated way, often via friends.
“Although I will admit I do not actively keep up with breaking news every day I do get a lot of information on a daily basis through social networking, text messaging, and websites such as Gmail, where it does have headlines on the homepage. It is very important to me to have some sense of what is going on in the world on a daily basis, but I also focus in on issues that I do care about, and I keep up with that particular issues progress. For example, the Equal Rights campaign, or local and global environmental organizations, whose progress I follow via Twitter, Facebook or their websites.”

I'm not advocating media and information isn't necessary, it's the type of information...

Every action has a reaction...How the public reacts to the information determines the consequences of their actions.

So how has any of the information you've gathered from the media improve your lifestyle?

Get a grip !

What the human race is suffering from is mass hypnosis. We are in a country and in a world that is being run by unbelievably sick people. The chasm between what we're told is going on and what is really going on is absolutely enormous.

The media is constantly telling us what to believe is real. If you can persuade people that what they see with their eyes is what there is to see you've got them.

Because they'll laugh in your face of an explanation then which portrays the big picture of what's happening... and they have.

Good stuff PokinSmot. If only more people were like you. You see the truth. I see a few of the sheep decided to comment.

The point of view and statements made by governments, officials, military, police, national security organizations (such as the FBI and CIA), as well as various other political offices are regularly reported as facts and are published without any (or very little) fact checking by the corporate media.

CBS, CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, and Fox News all give political contributions.

Nah, corporate media lying to us…you wouldn’t say. You mean like Project MKULTRA or Operation Mockingbird.

The populatation is dumbed-down. They've been coerced into giving up individual liberties, prosperity, and the fundamentals that made the nation what it is.

The state has indirectly assumed control of the media in some instances. The government wants to control the internet. The internet is the universal symbol of the free transmission of ideas and opinions. The people, in their suburban-induced comas, will be convinced to give up these most important liberties. This is the Fourth Reich. Make no mistake people. The State has been given the rights to anything you think, eat, watch, feel, or believe and the people handed it to them out of fear. An unjustified fear, manifested by the US government and CIA,

Because if you lived, as I did, several years under Nazi totalitarianism, and then 20 years in communist totalitarianism, you would certainly realize how precious freedom is, and how easy it is to lose your freedom.

If Jesus were here today, he wouldn't be riding around on a donkey. He'd be taking a plane, he'd be using the media.

In order to function as a real democracy, or even as a moral, rational and socially responsible country all people need to have their voices heard, all people need to be informed about the actions and plans of their government

Joel Osteen is a friggin idiot. Nope you lose and the comment didn't fit your message. You believe in the shepherd BMA. TJ was for the people being the shepherd and the government the sheep. TJ said that in the 1800s before the media was owned and controlled by the government.TJ would be pissed off at people for not being revolutionaries anymore. The media back then was used to keep the government in check. Today the media is controlled by the government and used to indoctrinate the sheep.
