etc....... I could go on - so many great artist's made incredible music in the 80's - but it's always subjective to opinion.
I love A Flock of Seagulls, but you may think they were complete garbage. You might be in love with Aerosmith ( or another classic rock group ) and I could care less about them.
It's harder to find better music today but it's out there.
Can we just go ahead and put ya down for the 80s bubba?
All fun stuff you mentioned of course.....
I love Echo and the Bunnymen, and obviously some of the bigger ones you mentioned.....Nice list of good 80s groups.

There are good and bad bands from every era. I stopped at The King, because that would be about the age limit around here. But think about all those great jazz clubs in the 30s/40s/50s with Duke Ellington, etc., stompin' at The Savoy that a lot of people looked down on just because the musicians were not the right color......

My favourite genre of music is punk so mid to late 70s to me is all about The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam, Buzzcocks, etc. Throw in the amazing Reggae coming out of Jamaica around this time and the best R&B and you have some brilliant music being made. To me though the 70s also produced some of the worst music....boring, self-indulgent rock bands, awful pop music, progressive rock.....yuck!
To me the 60s were about the Stones, the Beatles and the Psychedelic movement. A ton of great music was created.
I love old, hardcore, honkytonk country music. I listen to this all the time. Hank Williams Sr., Webb Pierce, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell, Carl Smith, etc. Throw in the birth of rock n' roll and some amazing Blues music from the southern US and the late 40s and to the end of the 50s was just brilliant.
I love the new wave scene of the 80s which was born out of the punk scene. New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, etc. The 80s also gave us the birth of the American Hardcore scene and the birth of Rap so a ton of great music was being made during this decade. Unfortunately it also gave us some awful rock music like Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Areosmith, etc.
The 90s were brilliant for Nirvana, Canadian rock, Industrial, Rap and Hip Hop. The best dance music also came out of the early 90s.
I too am finding it hard to list what made the 2000s as good as some of the other eras but time sometimes help you put things like that in perspective. |

1st things 1st, AC/DC isn't an American band............2nd, the thread wasn't asking about the best era of American music. .............but let's see........The Eagles, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, Boston, Foreigner, Kansas, Styx, Ted Nugent, Blue oyster Cult, Montrose/Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon, Lynrd Skynrd, Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly, The Doors, CCR, Doobie Bros., Jefferson Starship, Journey..............all American bands that produced (arguably) their best albums in the 70's. I'm sure I've missed a few but that's a damn good sample & a damn good argument for the 70's, especially if you add in all the English/European bands.
There's really no other era that comes close.......

They all have their upsides and downsides...its what you prefer.
quite frankly, if you asked most of the musicians of these bands you will find that they got their roots from the great American Blues and Country composers from the early years of the USA.
I was born in 1963 so for me the 70s were my teen listening years. I really did like anything coming from the sixties...although some great stuff came out of the sixties. I appreciate the Stones and the Beatles more now than I did then. Right now I listen to so many different genres its not even funny. Metalica is my car right now...next week I would'nt be surprised if Willie Nelson is playing.

i agree completely. Lets refine and say the good musc was from 1970-1974, then 1979-. Lots of crap in between that time frame. |
