ya, incredible movie.  it's amazing... sad... maddening....

human beings can be horrible and wonderful creatures.  hard to believe that stuff happened within the lifetimes of people that are alive today. and happening in some parts of our planet.

a lot of people obviously agree with you guys. it won Oscars for Best Director (Roman Polanski) Best Actor (Adrien Brody) and was nominated for Best Picture.

VERY well acted BUT Holocaust themed movies usually get my blood up. other excellent movies in the genre are Schindler's List (obviously as it's another Ocar winner), Defiance and The Grey Zone. two I would recommend with a Holocaust "aftermath" theme are Everything Is Illuminated and Rod Steiger's The Pawnbroker

BEST scenes in The Pawnbroker, "You People?" followed by Mr Smith (Juano Hernandez) and "Money" >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=YUcBmD8XhHU&NR=1

http://www.nndb.com/people/112/000026034/ says "Religion: Jewish" BUT also says "Brody's father is Jewish, his mother Catholic, and his family was not very religious either way"

It is a fantastic film.

I lent it to a Jewish friend. He told me he could not watch the whole film and had to stop about half way. He said that he was shaking and went into the kitchen to make a drink and shook so much he dropped the drink on the kitchen floor.

The first half of the movie was horrible, as in the way the person were treated. The second half was actually motivating. Watching Brody's character do what he had to do to survive. Tell you friend to finish watching it.

You find yourself rooting for him when the tanks are shelling the building he lives in. I even found myself happy when he would find a few morsels of food to eat and a few drops of water to drink.
