MVP Joined: May 2003 Posts: 16558 Location: United States	#26 Posted: 5/1/2012 12:30:36 PM let me give you an example. this is a file right in front of me. the female and male were dating and lived together. she tells him she's breaking up with him. she's at a gas station and talking to him on her cell phone. they are arguing and he shows up in his own car. they get into an artgument, he ends up throwing her against the car and then on to the ground. he gets in her car in the driver's seat. she gets in the passenger seat because he has her car and ehr phone. she tries to grab her phone and the keys and he physically prevents her. he drives her around for a while. she's trying to get her phone and to get him to stop the car. the two are fighting over the phone in the car, both hitting each other. finally, he stops at a parking lot and they fight some more and he gets out. she gets in the driver's seat and drives away. he keeps her phone and leave on foot. she feels bad that he is stranded and drives back top take him to his car. she sees that he has flagged down a couple of police officers parked in the parking lot. she goes to them to see what's going on. she gets arrested for domestic battery. she is half his size, has bruises all over and she is facing domestic battery charges. nothing happened to him. he's the victim. this is far from uncommon.

I will never forget a few things my instructor said: "You want to be a vigilante? You take that attitude and kill someone and you'll be sitting in a cell crying like a little baby in the corner. I've seen the toughest of tough guys who has killed someone and they never are the same. You don't want that...EVER. Does it sound like this was the logic used by Zimmerman and/or Martin in the Zimmerman case? Nada. Or the case referenced here by Dirt? Nada. Or the case where the kid banged on the hood of that dude's car and shook his fist at him? Nada. If the logic referenced above had been used by the parties involved in all these cases, everyone would still be alive. Yeah, it's all the fault of the guns.

Yeah, it's all the fault of the guns. all true, but none of that is my point. it helps to do the right thing. but if you don't dop the right thing, or if you do the right thing but the police/government say you didn't, or if the right thing is in a gray area along with your conduct and the police/government take the other side, you may be fucked because that's how our system works and there may be some ridiculously serious laws in place that don't differentiate between people who were 100% wrong when they used a gun and people who were 10% wrong when they used a gun.

I get that. Do I think she deserves 20 years for what she did? No. But if she would have bothered to find out ahead of time what kind of punishment she might incur if she did that, maybe she would have decided to drive away and call the cops instead of going back into the house and firing a warning shot into the ceiling.
