Isn’t He Clever had ranked 21st on the graded stakes earnings list that determines the Derby starters should more than 20 enter the race. His defection moves Optimizer, trained by D. Wayne Lukas for Brad Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall, into the 21st spot, meaning the colt needs one more defection in order to make the field. Optimizer, the runner-up in the Rebel Stakes (G2), finished ninth in the Arkansas Derby.
