Recap

Red Wings 3, Kings 2 (SO): Defenseman Niklas Kronwall scored a controversial goal to tie the contest with 27 seconds remaining in the third period before Tomas Tatar netted the lone tally in the shootout as host Detroit defeated Los Angeles for the second time in eight days.

With the Red Wings trailing 2-1 late in the third, Kronwall's shot from the point caromed off the skates of Los Angeles' Jarret Stoll and deflected off the protective net. The puck returned into the play and caromed off the back of Jonathan Quick (33 saves) and into the goal. The Kings protested the call, but the goal was not reviewable since none of the officials blew the whistle to stop play when the puck hit the net.

Tatar, who scored the game-winning goal in last Saturday's 3-1 triumph over the Kings, scored in the first round of the shootout by wristing a shot between the pads of Quick. Tatar pointed skyward - as he did after last week's goal - to honor his late father. Jimmy Howard (30 saves) denied all three attempts in the bonus format to preserve the win.

Captain Henrik Zetterberg also tallied for the Red Wings, who had dropped a pair of 1-0 setbacks to Anaheim (Sunday) and the New York Rangers (Thursday).

With his team on the power play, Jeff Carter gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead with 2:15 remaining in the third period after cleaning up defenseman Drew Doughty's blast from the point for his team-leading 18th goal - and second in as many games. Mike Richards also scored with the man advantage for the Kings, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Richards settled the puck along the right-wing boards and skated in before wristing a shot from the dot that caromed off Howard's mask and into the net 9:06 into the second period. ... Zetterberg answered 41 seconds later to snap his team's goal drought at 152 minutes, 21 seconds. The captain converted C Gustav Nyquist's brilliant no-look pass from the corner after it sailed between teammate LW Justin Abdelkader's legs. ... Red Wings C Pavel Datsyuk missed his sixth consecutive game with a lower-body injury. RW Daniel Alfredsson (back), LW Johan Franzen (upper body, concussion), C Darren Helm (groin, shoulder) and D Jonathan Ericsson (upper body) were also absent.
