Recap

Sabres 2, Capitals 1 (SO): Captain Steve Ott scored in the sixth round of the shootout and Ryan Miller turned aside 49 shots as Buffalo shaded visiting Washington.

Following an uneventful overtime, the teams exchanged quality chances in the bonus format but came up empty-handed. Ott put Buffalo ahead with a shot that beat Washington netminder Philipp Grubauer (16 saves) up high, and Miller denied defenseman Mike Green to preserve the Sabres' fourth win in six games (4-1-1).

Troy Brouwer scored in regulation for Washington, which outshot Buffalo 50-17. Drew Stafford replied for the Sabres.

After dominating the first period but failing to hit the scoresheet, the Capitals were stymied on a man-advantage in the latter moments of the second and the Sabres rode the momentum to the opening goal. Stafford redirected defenseman Christian Ehrhoff's wrist shot from the side boards past Grubauer at 18:18 for his fourth of the season.

Washington drew even 5:34 into the third, as Brouwer capitalized on Ott's turnover with a well-placed slap shot over Miller's shoulder. The Capitals pressed for the go-ahead goal, but Miller made a series of saves over the final four minutes to force overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Captain Alex Ovechkin outshot the Sabres 6-3 in the opening period and finished with 12 shots. ... The Sabres improved to 9-3-1 when Ehrhoff records a point. ... Sunday marked the second time Miller has faced 50 or more shots this season; San Jose peppered him with 51 in a 5-4 Buffalo victory Nov. 5.
