After Joe Louis Arena experienced a power outage earlier in the day, New York lit up the home team with a three-goal first period. Okposo converted a 2-on-1 rush with captain John Tavares to open the scoring at 10:57 and Grabner doubled the advantage by wiring a shot over Mrazek's left shoulder from the slot at 15:07.

The Islanders negated an icing and Matt Martin alertly fed Cizikas, who tapped home the pass from in front 1:48 later to give New York a 3-0 lead. Buoyed by the offense, Nabokov highlighted his first shutout of the season by stopping 11 shots in the second period.
