Recap

Blackhawks 2, Sabres 1: Patrick Kane's power-play goal proved to be the decisive tally as host Chicago edged winless Buffalo.

Ben Smith also scored and Corey Crawford turned aside 28 shots as the Blackhawks won for the second time in as many nights and dropped the Sabres to 0-5-1 - the team's worst start since opening 0-5-2 in 1999-2000.

Ryan Miller made 38 saves and Drew Stafford scored with just over eight minutes to play for Buffalo, which has mustered only six goals during its six-game winless skid.

Smith scored the lone goal of the first period, deflecting a shot by defenseman Brent Seabrook as the Blackhawks poured 20 shots on Miller in the opening 20 minutes. Chicago continued to apply relentless pressure and it finally paid off with 25 seconds left in the second period when Kane received a cross-ice pass in the right faceoff circle and snapped a shot past Miller for his fourth goal.

With the Blackhawks owning a 37-16 edge in shots through two periods, the prospects of a comeback appeared bleak for Buffalo, but Stafford cut the deficit in half when he accepted a feed from Cody Hodgson and beat Crawford to the far corner at 11:49.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Blackhawks LW Patrick Sharp, playing in his 600th game, assisted on Kane's goal - only the second power-play tally allowed by the Sabres in 20 chances. ... Buffalo was without RW Patrick Kaleta, who was suspended Friday and has an in-person hearing scheduled for Tuesday due to his hit to the head of Columbus D Jack Johnson on Thursday. ... Blackhawks F Michal Handzus, who scored the winning goal in Friday's 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders, was not in the lineup as coach Joel Quenneville is electing to rest him in back-to-back sets.
