Recap

Canucks 6, Oilers 2: Daniel Sedin and defenseman Jason Garrison each had a goal and an assist to lift Vancouver in its home opener and give coach John Tortorella his first win with the club.

Roberto Luongo made 21 saves and captain Henrik Sedin collected three assists as the Canucks improved to 5-0-1 in their last six home games against Edmonton and sent the Oilers to their first 0-2-0 start since 1998-99.

Blue-liner Dan Hamhuis and Jannik Hansen scored 18 seconds apart late in the first period while Brad Richardson and Garrison had short-handed goals. Ryan Kesler added an unassisted tally for Vancouver, which held an overwhelming 44-23 advantage in shots on goal. Defenseman Jeff Petry and Boyd Gordon scored for the Oilers, who surrendered five unanswered goals.

The Canucks spotted Edmonton a 1-0 lead on Petry's goal 1:58 into the contest, but Richardson leveled it by converting a short-handed breakaway less than two minutes later by slipping a shot between the pads of Devan Dubnyk. Vancouver went ahead to stay when Hamhuis' knuckler from just inside the blue line eluded Dubnyk before Hansen made it 3-1 with a one-timer 18 seconds later.

Daniel Sedin continued the barrage in the second, converting a slick behind-the-back pass from his twin brother for a 4-1 lead. Kesler added an unassisted tally with 6:04 left in the period to chase Dubnyk (26 saves), who has allowed 10 goals in less than two periods.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Vancouver's 22 shots in the opening period matched its total from the season opener at San Jose and surpassed its high (20) from any session last season. ... Oilers LW Jesse Joensuu suffered a lower-body injury in the second period and did not return. ... Canucks C Alex Burrows will be sidelined for at least two weeks with a foot injury sustained when he blocked a shot against the Sharks.
