Blues 4, Blackhawks 3 (SO): Adam Cracknell scored twice in regulation and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk netted the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout as St. Louis snapped its eight-game losing streak at the United Center.
Captain David Backes scored a third-period goal, Chris Porter notched two assists and Brian Elliott made 33 saves for the Blues, who climbed into eighth place in the Western Conference - one point ahead of Edmonton and Columbus. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester recorded an assist in his St. Louis debut.
Goals were not hard to come by in the shootout as each team converted in the first, second and fourth rounds. Neither club scored in the fifth and Elliott denied Michal Handzus in his first game with Chicago before Shattenkirk lifted the puck under the crossbar to give the Blues their first win in the Windy City since Feb. 3, 2010.
Captain Jonathan Toews recorded a goal and an assist, rookie Brandon Saad and Viktor Stalberg also scored and Corey Crawford stopped 19 shots for the Blackhawks, who increased their lead over idle Pittsburgh in the race for the Presidents' Trophy to two points.
Cracknell opened the scoring with 3:57 remaining in the first period, blasting the puck past Crawford from above the right faceoff circle, but Toews and Saad scored 2:27 apart early in the second to put Chicago in front. Cracknell converted a breakaway chance 3 1/2 minutes into the third to cap his first career two-goal effort and Backes put the Blues ahead at 7:06 before Stalberg forged a tie with 4:31 to play.
