Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 1: Lars Eller scored and added two assists as visiting Montreal ended its season with a thumping of Northeast Division rival Toronto.

Rookie Brendan Gallagher and defenseman Andrei Markov each had a goal and an assist, Tomas Plekanec also scored and Peter Budaj made 16 saves for the Canadiens, who have a one-point lead in the division over Boston. The Bruins host the Ottawa Senators on Sunday to finish their season.

Phil Kessel opened the scoring during a power play for the Maple Leafs, who finished fifth in the Eastern Conference and will face either Boston or Montreal in the opening round of the playoffs. James Reimer allowed four goals on 23 shots before being replaced early in the third period by Ben Scrivens, who made five saves.

After a back-and-forth first period left the contest knotted at 1-1, Montreal outshot Toronto 11-1 in a lopsided second en route to a 3-1 lead. Markov’s point shot through traffic off a faceoff win by Eller eluded Reimer at 4:19 and Gallagher batted a loose puck past the sprawling goaltender during a rush nearly five minutes later.

Plekanec snapped a 12-game goalless drought to chase Reimer 2:25 into the third, when his wrist shot sailed over the netminder’s blocker. Budaj turned aside 10 shots in the final 20 minutes to seal the victory.
