Red Wings 2, Avalanche 1: Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall scored in the second period as host Detroit held off Colorado.

Jimmy Howard turned aside 36 shots and came within 90 seconds of his second shutout as the Red Wings won for only the fourth time in their last 11 games (4-4-3).

Paul Stastny had the lone goal for the Avalanche, backhanding a rebound of his own shot past Howard, but it wasn't enough to prevent Colorado from seeing its road winless streak extend to six games (0-3-3).

Franzen put the Red Wings on top seven minutes into the second period, going in on a breakaway to beat Jean-Sebastien Giguere (31 saves) and halt a six-game point drought.

Kronwall doubled the lead with 2:28 remaining in the session with a fortunate goal. His blast from the point caromed off the back boards and hit the back of Giguere's skate and deflected into the net. Giguere fell to 6-14-1-1 lifetime against the Red Wings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Franzen had 13 goals and five assists in 25 games against Colorado, which had won the previous two meetings with Detroit. ... The Avalanche haven't had a six-game drought away from home since an 0-8-1 skid from Oct. 26-Dec. 15, 2011. ... The Red Wings have not allowed a goal in the first two periods for four straight games.
