Coyotes 5, Ducks 4 (SO): Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout as host Phoenix edged Anaheim for the second time in three days.
Steve Sullivan and Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf converted their second-round attempts, but Phoenix's Mike Smith and Anaheim's Jonas Hiller were impenetrable over the next two rounds. Ekman-Larsson opened the fifth by beating Hiller high to the glove side, and Smith denied Bobby Ryan to clinch the win.
Antoine Vermette, defenseman Keith Yandle and captain Shane Doan reached milestones with regulation goals and Smith made 27 saves for the Coyotes, who improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 home games. Phoenix also posted a 5-4 shootout win over Anaheim at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday.
Getzlaf recorded a goal and an assist, Corey Perry netted a tally and set up another and Hiller stopped 36 shots for the Ducks, who can avoid being swept when the Pacific Division rivals conclude their rare three-game series Wednesday in Anaheim. Ryan and Matt Beleskey also scored as the Ducks earned a point for the 10th time in 11 contests (8-1-2).
Vermette forged a 1-1 tie 59 seconds into the second period with his 150th career goal and Yandle gave Phoenix the lead less than six minutes later with a one-timer that resulted in his 200th NHL point. Doan knotted the contest at 3-3 only 11 seconds after Perry's power-play tally early in the third, recording his 324th goal - and 800th point - to snap a tie with Keith Tkachuk for second place on the franchise list, and defenseman Michael Stone answered Ryan's score at 7:49.
