Recap
Oilers 3, Coyotes 2 (SO): Jordan Eberle scored in both regulation and the shootout as host Edmonton rallied past Phoenix.
Teemu Hartikainen tied the game at 2-2 at 8:04 of the third period with his first goal of the season. Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves and denied Mikkel Boedker and defenseman David Rundblad in the shootout.
Kyle Chipchura opened the scoring and Matthew Lombardi added his first goal of the season during a second-period power play for the Coyotes. Mike Smith stopped 41 shots.
Sam Gagner scored what proved to be the decisive goal in the opening round of the shootout, beating Smith along the ice following a deke. After Khabibulin stopped Boedker’s attempt, Eberle flipped a backhand shot over Smith’s blocker, and Rundblad was unable to extend the contest.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second period, Eberle started Edmonton’s comeback by tipping top overall pick Nail Yakupov’s centering feed past Smith on the rush. With the Oilers on the man advantage in the third, defenseman Justin Schultz’s point shot was redirected through the crease by Ryan Smyth straight to Hartikainen, who flipped the puck into a vacant net to forge a tie.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Smyth has a goal and three assists in four games since being a healthy scratch. … Oilers LW Taylor Hall served the first of a two-game suspension for an illegal hit on Cal Clutterbuck of the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. … Coyotes RW Radim Vrbata was expected to play but missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. C Martin Hanzal also was scratched with an upper-body injury.
