Recap

Maple Leafs 3, Sabres 1: James van Riemsdyk scored twice and captain Dion Phaneuf recorded his 100th career goal to help host Toronto spoil the debut of Buffalo interim coach Ron Rolston.

Van Riemsdyk netted his team-leading 10th and 11th goals of the season to give the Maple Leafs a two-goal cushion after Phaneuf tied the game early in the second period. Phil Kessel had two assists and Ben Scrivens made 31 saves after allowing four goals on 13 shots in Tuesday's loss at Tampa Bay.

Tyler Ennis scored the lone goal for Buffalo, which lost its first game under Rolston’s guidance after long-time coach Lindy Ruff was fired on Wednesday. Ryan Miller stopped 33 shots en route to his fifth loss in six starts.

Ennis gave the Sabres the lead in the first period when his wrist shot off a rush into the right faceoff circle beat Scrivens and snuck under the crossbar. Phaneuf scored on a power play 1:15 into the second, blasting a cross-ice feed from Kessel near the right point.

Van Riemsdyk drove to the net on a 2-on-1 with Kessel late in the period and tapped the puck around Miller to give Toronto the lead. He extended it during a 5-on-3 power play late in the third, one-timing a pass from defenseman Cody Franson. The Maple Leafs finished 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Phaneuf also assisted on van Riemsdyk’s second goal. … The Maple Leafs improved to 2-1-0 against the Sabres this season.
