Coyotes 5, Blue Jackets 3: Martin Hanzal snapped a tie with a power-play goal at 8:18 of the third period and scored into an empty net with 64 seconds remaining as host Phoenix won for the fifth time in seven games.
David Moss, Radim Vrbata and Kyle Chipchura also tallied, defenseman Keith Yandle notched three assists and Mike Smith made 17 saves for the Coyotes, who outshot the Blue Jackets 14-3 in the third and 35-20 overall.
Yandle received a cross-ice pass from Steve Sullivan before dishing the puck to Hanzal, whose initial shot from alone in the crease hit the left post. Hanzal, who also had an assist, managed to grab the loose puck and bury it before Steve Mason was able to react, giving Phoenix a 4-3 lead.
Enforcer Jared Boll posted his third career two-point performance with a goal and an assist, Matt Calvert and Derek MacKenzie also scored and Mason stopped 30 shots for the Blue Jackets, who fell to 0-2-0 on their six-game road trip.
Boll got Columbus on the board 2:09 into the game with a shot from along the right-wing boards that sneaked past Smith, but Moss and Vrbata scored 90 seconds apart to give Phoenix a 2-1 edge. The lead lasted exactly one minute as Calvert fired a shot over sliding defenseman Chris Summers and into the top right corner of the net during a 2-on-1 rush.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chipchura put the Coyotes ahead 3-2 late in the first period before MacKenzie beat Smith from the high slot 5:16 into the second. ... Vrbata left the game midway through the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return. Phoenix already was without D Derek Morris, who left Thursday's loss to Nashville in the first period with an upper-body injury. ... Columbus, which is 1-4-1 in its last six contests overall, has recorded a total of 33 shots over the first two games of its road trip.
