Blackhawks 4, Sharks 1: Marcus Kruger and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson each recorded a goal and an assist as host Chicago continued its remarkable start to the season while extending San Jose's winless streak.
Dave Bolland and Andrew Shaw also scored while Ray Emery made 27 saves for the Blackhawks, who improved to 11-0-3 overall and 1-0-1 on their seven-game homestand. Chicago is three away from setting the NHL record for most games without a regulation loss to start a season - a mark currently owned by the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks, who opened the campaign 12-0-4.
Tim Kennedy tallied and Antti Niemi stopped 33 shots for the Sharks, who fell to 0-4-3 this month after winning all seven of their games in January. San Jose is 0-2-1 halfway through its six-game road trip.
Bolland gave Chicago the lead with less than a minute remaining in the first period. After Niemi stopped his initial shot from the right faceoff circle, Bolland continued skating to the net, grabbed his own rebound and slid the puck around the goaltender with 44 seconds left for his fifth goal.
Niemi had an adventure with the puck early in the second, and Kruger capitalized for a 2-0 advantage.
From the blue line, Kruger flipped the puck on net and it bounced past Niemi before hitting the right post. The puck then skipped into the crease, and Kruger knocked it in at 3:05.
Kennedy halved the deficit less than two minutes later, converting a 2-on-1 down low for his first goal. But Shaw cashed in during a power play later in the period and Hjalmarsson scored from the point 6 1/2 minutes into the third to cap the scoring.
