Islanders 4, Rangers 3 (SO): Frans Nielsen and John Tavares scored in the shootout as the Islanders snapped a five-game losing streak with their first win in their last nine visits to Madison Square Garden.

Tavares, Colin McDonald and Brad Boyes scored in the first 7:25 of the second period to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 36 shots, including 12 in the third period, and denied Marian Gaborik and Rick Nash in the shootout.

Gaborik had a goal and an assist on his 31st birthday, Carl Hagelin scored his third goal in four games and added an assist and defenseman Dan Girardi opened the scoring for the Rangers. Martin Biron made 28 saves in his second start of the season, falling to 21-4-2 with a tie in his career against the Islanders.

The Islanders struggled early and didn’t register a shot on goal for the first 13 minutes, 58 seconds. By then, Girardi and Gaborik had scored to put the Rangers up 2-0.

After the Islanders took the lead, Hagelin stuffed in the rebound of Gaborik's shot on the power play for a goal that proved controversial. Officials did not make a definitive call on the ice and needed video review to determine the puck crossed the goal line, much to the dismay of Islanders coach Jack Capuano.
