Coyotes 1, Sharks 0 (SO): Mikkel Boedker scored the decisive goal in the shootout and Mike Smith made 33 saves as Phoenix extended host San Jose's winless streak to four games.
Radim Vrbata also tallied in the bonus format as the Coyotes avenged a 5-3 loss at San Jose on Jan. 24.
After Smith began the shootout with a blocker save on Michal Handzus, Boedker raced in on Antti Niemi and made a quick deke before roofing a backhander. Smith denied James Sheppard on San Jose's second opportunity, and Vrbata clinched the win by lifting another backhander past Niemi.
Smith turned aside nine shots in the first period, six in the second and 15 in the third before making three saves in overtime. It was the 21st career shutout and second this season for Smith, who blanked the Sharks three times last season.
Niemi finished with 21 saves for his 20th career blanking and first this season. The Finn stopped nine shots in the opening session, seven in the second, three in the third and two in overtime.
The Coyotes held a one-shot advantage through 40 minutes before being outshot 15-3 in the third, but Smith was equal to the task and helped earn his team a point.
San Jose went 0-for-4 on the power play as it fell to 0-2-2 following a season-opening seven-game winning streak.
