Devils 3, Islanders 0: Steve Bernier scored two goals just 70 seconds apart late in the third period and Johan Hedberg turned aside all 22 shots he faced as visiting New Jersey snapped a four-game winless skid.
David Clarkson had an empty-net goal and defenseman Andy Greene added a pair of assists for the Devils, who killed off all seven short-handed situations to end New York's two-game winning streak.
After defenseman Brian Strait was whistled for charging, New Jersey made the Islanders pay with 3:54 remaining in the third period to snap a scoreless tie. Greene's shot from the high slot caromed off New York captain Mark Streit, but Bernier alertly spotted the loose puck on the doorstep and beat Evgeni Nabokov (24 saves).
Bernier provided insurance shortly thereafter by firing a sharp-angle shot from behind the goal line off Nabokov's body and into the net.
Making just his second start this season, Hedberg registered his 22nd career shutout after stopping 10 shots in the first period, seven in the second and five in the third.
