Penguins 6, Capitals 3: Chris Kunitz completed his third career hat trick with eight seconds remaining in the third period and captain Sidney Crosby added three assists as Pittsburgh continued its solid play on the road.
Matt Cooke and defenseman Kris Letang collected a goal and an assist apiece and blue-liner Paul Martin also scored. Former Capital Tomas Vokoun turned aside 21 shots - and denied captain Alex Ovechkin from point-blank range with 8 1/2 minutes to play in the third period - as the Penguins improved to 5-1-0 away from the Consol Energy Center.
Mike Ribeiro scored a power-play goal and defensemen Mike Green and John Carlson added goals, but the Capitals couldn't overcome a shaky effort by Braden Holtby (six goals on 26 shots) and fell to 12-2-3 in the last 17 regular-season contests versus Pittsburgh.
Carlson leveled the contest at 2-2 at 4:03 of the second period after his dump-in off the boards caromed past an out-of-position Vokoun. Pittsburgh quickly regrouped as Letang answered 2:53 later with a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle which sailed under the arm of Holtby.
Kunitz followed suit 37 seconds later after completing a give-and-go with Crosby before firing a shot from the same location which once again beat Holtby under the left arm. Kunitz added his second after depositing Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin's brilliant cross-slot feed into the net before capping the hat trick on a 5-on-3 power play in the waning moments.
