: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season just over five minutes into the third period to give host Washington its first win.

Joel Ward had a goal and an assist, defenseman John Erskine recorded his first tally and Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves for Washington.

Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno netted their respective first goals and Miller finished with 27 saves for Buffalo, which has lost its last three games.

Ennis opened the scoring midway through the first period on a smooth backhand move in the slot. Ward tied the game nearly 6 1/2 minutes later with his team-leading third goal of the season.

Erskine gave the Capitals a 2-1 advantage early in the second when his shot from the point through a screen deflected off Buffalo center Cody Hodgson and past Miller. After Ovechkin made it 3-1, Foligno pulled the Sabres within one with just under 10 minutes remaining - but Neuvirth held on for the win.
