: Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves and Matt Duchene recorded two goals and an assist as host Colorado blanked Columbus.

PA Parenteau had a goal and an assist, John Mitchell scored and Milan Hejduk set up a pair of goals for the Avalanche, who improved to 33-10-1-1 against the Blue Jackets.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots for Columbus, which fell to 0-2-1 since a season-opening shootout win over Nashville.

Varlamov turned aside 11 shots in the first period, 12 in the second and 10 in the third en route to his ninth career shutout and first this season. The goaltender raised his record to 13-3-1 in his last 17 home games.

After setting up Parenteau's goal 51 seconds into the contest, Duchene buried a loose puck from in close with 7:35 remaining in the first period. Mitchell beat Bobrovsky from the right faceoff circle early in the third, and Duchene capped the scoring by skating around Columbus defenseman Nikita Nikitin in the slot and slipping the puck between Bobrovsky's pads.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cam Atkinson, who began the day having scored one of Columbus' six goals this season, was scratched with a lower-body injury. ...
