Recap
Canadiens 4, Capitals 1: Defenseman Andrei Markov continued his hot start with a goal and an assist as visiting Montreal topped Washington, which fell to 0-3-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
Tomas Plekanec, captain Brian Gionta and defenseman Josh Gorges scored during a four-goal second period and Carey Price made 30 saves for the Canadiens, who were playing their first road game of the shortened campaign.
Joey Crabb denied Price the shutout on his first goal with 2:23 left in the third period for the Capitals, who have been outscored 14-6 in the first three games.
Montreal broke things open with two power-play goals less than a minute apart in the second period. Plekanec took a feed from Markov and fired a snap shot from 21 feet away that beat Michal Neuvirth 57 seconds before Markov sent a wrist shot in from 13 feet to make it at 2-0 gap.
Gionta tipped Rene Bourque’s attempt in 3:55 later and Francis Bouillon unleashed a slap shot from nearly 60 feet away that Gorges redirected past Neuvirth 1:39 before the end of the period to stretch it to 4-0.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin, who was moved over from the left side by new coach Adam Oates, has yet to record a point. Ovechkin registered three shots on goal against the Canadiens. … Montreal D Raphael Diaz collected two more assists and has five on the season. … LW Max Pacioretty added two assists for the Canadiens.
