Recap
Senators 4, Panthers 0: Kyle Turris scored twice and Craig Anderson made 31 saves to shut out his former team as Ottawa won its home opener.
Turris converted a one-timer from a bad angle during a first-period power play and tapped in a great return feed from Guillaume Latendresse in the second. Jim O’Brien and rookie Jakob Silfverberg also scored for Ottawa late in the third period.
Jose Theodore stopped 33 shots for Florida, which looked lost after picking apart the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 in its season opener.
Anderson recorded his 20th career shutout, making 12 saves in the second period and 15 in the third as the Panthers had extended pressure in the offensive zone late in the final session. O’Brien and Silfverberg scored with less than three minutes remaining to put away the game.
Florida rookie Jonathan Huberdeau could not find any room on the ice against the Senators and did not register a shot after getting three points in his NHL debut against the Hurricanes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ottawa C Jason Spezza had an assist and was 13-for-18 in the faceoff circle. … Former Senator Alex Kovalev had one shot and one hit while being booed every time he touched the puck. Kovalev recorded 76 points in 131 games with Ottawa from 2009-11. ... Silfverberg had 29 points in 34 games with the American Hockey League’s Binghamton Senators this season.
