Recap
Oilers 3, Canucks 2 (SO): Ales Hemsky tied the contest with 5:55 remaining in the third period and scored in the shootout on a nifty forehand deke as visiting Edmonton won its opening game for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Jordan Eberle also scored while Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves and stopped both shootout opportunities he faced for the Oilers, who trailed 2-0 late in the second period. With Edmonton trailing 2-1 in the third, Hemsky received a pass from Sam Gagner and charged toward the net from the right side, tucking a wrist shot underneath Roberto Luongo’s right arm.
Alex Edler and Zack Kassian scored for the Canucks, who failed to rebound from an ugly 7-3 home loss to Anaheim on Saturday. Luongo stopped 30 shots in regulation and overtime, but couldn’t solve Hemsky or Gagner in the shootout.
Edler opened the scoring midway through the first period, intercepting a pass by Oilers rookie Nail Yakupov before firing a slap shot from the high slot that fooled Dubnyk. Kassian finished a nice passing play between Daniel and Henrik Sedin with six minutes remaining in the second period and also fought Ben Eager after Hemsky tied the game.
Eberle took a drop pass from Taylor Hall at the blue line and drove down the left side boards before cutting to the net and flipping a backhand past Luongo with three seconds remaining in the second period.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yakupov, the first overall pick in 2012, finished minus-2 with one shot on goal in his NHL debut. … Free agent rookie defenseman Justin Schultz had one shot in almost 20:52 time on ice for Edmonton in his NHL debut. … The Canucks played 24 overtime/shootout games last season, second only to the Florida Panthers (25). Vancouver won 14 of those games.
