Blue Jackets 3, Predators 2 (SO): Derick Brassard scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout as visiting Columbus edged Nashville in the season opener for both teams.
Nick Foligno and Artem Anisimov tallied in regulation while defenseman Fedor Tyutin notched two assists for the Blue Jackets, who played their first game without Rick Nash since 2002 as the former captain was traded to the New York Rangers last summer.
Martin Erat and blue-liner Ryan Ellis scored for Nashville, which went 5-0-1 against Columbus last season and had won 19 of its previous 20 home meetings with the Blue Jackets.
Brassard made a quick deke to his backhand before beating Pekka Rinne to the stick side on Columbus' sixth chance in the shootout. Craig Smith had an opportunity to extend the contest, but his backhander rang off the left goal post, clinching the win for the Blue Jackets.
Erat wasted little time giving Nashville the lead, beating Sergei Bobrovsky with a wrist shot from the top of the slot just 39 seconds into the game. Foligno and Ellis traded power-play goals late in the first period as the Predators carried a 2-1 lead into intermission, but Anisimov beat Rinne with a backhander with less than eight minutes left in the second to knot the contest.
